Question about the door hardware such as the window regulator, door handle remote regulator, and latch. My hardware is in pretty good condition, but it is bare metal with a little rust. Can I coat it with some rattle can paint to protect it? Will the paint gum up the mechanism?
Mick Jagger says "I see a red door and want to paint it black"
Sorry, couldn't resist.
I painted my mechanisms with some rattle can grey but before it I had lubed up the contact areas with lithium grease. I did tape off a couple of areas where I didn't want paint & grease goo to gum things up. Now that hardware will be protected for another 70 years.

Nobody sees it. Paint it any color you want. The paint will wear off on moving/meshing parts on the window regulator.
I just painted my window regulators yesterday with some silver paint I had left over although I masked off the gear and spring. I also made some new felt washers from leftover upholstery padding and retainer clips from the handles of some small binder clips. I'm not sure if the felts will hold up and I don't think the clips are tight enough. Does anyone know a source for the felts and clips?
If it is pretty rusty and won’t clean up use Eastwood Rust Converter. Then you can paint it a light color like the silver that Dan used that makes it much easier to see if on reassembly.
I found the clips in their catalog and they also have the original style hose clamps that I've been looking for. Still looking for a source for the felt washers.
