First time this happened was when I **** down at a drive thru no start no crank. I rolled back moved the gear selector kept turningnkey checking fuses etc. truck cranked and ran fine that was 2 weeks ago. Yesterday at sea we had a no start no crank because the ignition wouldn’t turn( lesson implemented as admiral call the Captian back to the boat so if the key breaks it’s on him lolol) after some tense moments we had her running. Of course than the starter sprocket was kicking the flyweel after we decided to not shut her down till return to port. That issue “self repaired” and we kept fishing. Upon getting to my truck and hitting another drive thru the truck would not turn on. Everything appears normal except nonstarter response when turning the key. Now this morning it happened again. I was able to fire up but don’t want to have what ever it if fully give out and become stranded.
Did you try jumping the starter solenoid? Pretty easy to do with a screw driver. That would help to determine if it's the ignition switch or the starter/solenoid that's failing. Do you have an aftermarket alarm? My truck has a Code Alarm from the previous owner and it randomly disables my ignition switch 25% of the time. I got sick of the screwdriver method, so I installed a relay that puts power to the starter solenoid when I push a hidden button in the cab.
I have an 02 we just pulled the line that goes to the solenoid ran a test line to the battery and t cranked right up. After a fine start up this morning and than acting up again prior to testing.
All the relays click when I turn the key all they way leadingme to believe it’s the neutral saftey switch. I pulled it and cleaned it also it was properly lined up. Going to get a new one
If you mean that the relays are "chattering" it is an indication of low voltage. Check all battery and ground connections first. It can save a lot of time.
It just does one click when the key is turned to start. Any particular grounds to check? Every time I hit the starter solenoid line to the battery positive it starts right up.
Sounds like the starter solenoid then. They can go bad slowly if the internal contacts are burned. Had to take a reman one from "down South" one time. It was so poorly "rebuilt" I was amazed it even worked at all.
