I have lots of questions about my new (ha ha relative term) F-100. First is deciphering the Vin number. Here it is.
F10GCR33370
133 RX F101 L4 G 17J
04650 42
So? What does it say?
Ok so next question. It runs...... as long as it has gas in it. Problem being that the gas tank has a leak. I would just take it off and patch it except for 2 things. One im afraid about getting the tank off safely. (how do I?) And two I'm afraid it's so rusted (everything is rusted) that it won't go on or for that matter come off.
What kind of engine do I have? And why is it so severly lacking in get up? I would like to clean this engine (take it apart and clean everything) but im afraid and my dad told me once I put it together it probably won't run agian.
What parts are compatable? If I go to buy a new gas tank, bed(it is rockable..... like it's not attached or something in the rear right corner) or somtehing.
What general things can I do to clean up and get this rusted hunk of beautiful junk running decently and fix it up a bit. It was a whole $200 for it. It starts and runs every time.... unless theres no gas. Thanks for all your help. -myers
Ok after looking around I have found that my truck has a V8 302. F100, 2 wheel drive, made in canada (knew this) yada yada. Actualy it's wierd cause the last 6 numbers are supposed to be well..... numbers? however only my last 5 are numbers. What should be the first of the six numbers is a R. Anyway, thanks for the help to the above questions ahead of time. -myers
The R is part of your build sequence number. The letter, from what I have picked up from this great site, corresponds to the month it was built. I don't fully understand the logicality of the letters but it all works out. Do a search for VIN decoder or go to Mil1ons website and you can find out more about your truck. Hope this helps.

Fal Grunt, when I got my (new) haha `79 f100 it came with a haynes repair manual and it had a whole page dedicated just to VIN codes, it desscribed axle ratios, paint codes and stuff I never heard of, it`s also fun to take out and read when I`m at the laundrymat..
I have a similar type situation. My is a 73 F100 built in Canada, nuber something like 563385 - half million built that year and so on. I'ver done ton of research since this will be a frame off restoration for me and my 14 year old. J 17 is axle (rear) code for 3.25 rear end and I'd bet you have a 9 inch pumkin in there also. There is sites that will tell you that the axle code 17 is for a 3.31, that's for 78 and newer.
I'm building a 331 stroker motor - under 2 grand for parts and most of it new other than block and heads - machining those things like bigger valves and so on. Total budget will be about 3500 to 4500
Let me know what else I can be of assistance with. Oh year, forget the Hayes manual, in my opinion, go to DetroitIron.com and order the 5 shop manual set for 50 bucks - total worth it.
