"Engine number" used to be like the VIN, and still is for motorcycles and certain other vehicles. The use of an engine number for cars and light trucks dropped off about 50+ years ago. Ford only put partial VINs on some performance engines in the '60s.
Now if you are looking for casting codes and date codes, that's different.
Thanks for replying, i have seen that mentioned a few times (no engine number stamped)
I am in Australia and for registration purposes the police need to id the engine number on the block,i know that it is part of the vin number and i need to find it before i take it in for an id inspection.
All engines have a number here i don't know why it would be different in other countries, another member from Australia i see has asked the same question a while back but i don't see a clear answer.
Having it on a sticker on the rocker cover wont satisfy them they need to see it stamped on the block, possibly dot matrix.
I also have a 2000 v6 explorer i found the engine number on that by looking through the front wheel arch onto the side of the block, it is stamped on the left hand side.
OK, did a search here and came up with not much, other than a thread you already found. External search I find this, post number 7, side of block above starter: au 5.0 engine number - www.fordmods.com
Older engines, if stamped, had it under the intake manifold in the back right (as you face the engine) corner of the block.
I see a lot of people asking this same question across multiple forums. I do not see a clear picture or much of a clear answer other than the one above.
Seems to me the authorities in Australia would know where it is since they must have been through this countless times.
Found it on the left side of the block at the back just above the sump, it actually has the whole vin number of the explorer in 2 rows, bottom row is what they use for the engine number.

Left as you face the vehicle from the front, or as you sit in it? Thanks for posting this up.
Left hand side if your sitting in the vehicle look for a flat 2 sided rectangle area, use a good camera to take a picture, you can also see it through the wheel well.
