I agree the 3-wing China clips are not as reliable as the original 4-wing ones, BUT I have figured out a couple of tricks that make them work better than usual.
1) Take a small screwdriver and expand the gap between the sections before you install.
2) Take a BIG (I'm talking about the 18 inch) pair of channel lock pliers and a big cushioned rag (for the outside of the door skin) and squeeze them tightly into the holes. The big channel lock pliers offer the perfect angle to push them home very well.
When I changed mine, I didn't realize anybody sold the old ones.
