Vehicle Speed Sensor or ABS? Speedometer problem.

Vehicle Speed Sensor or ABS? Speedometer problem.
Does the speedometer read vehicle speed off of a vehicle speed sensor in the tailshaft of the transmission/transfer case, or does it read off of the Wheel Speed Sensors for the ABS?
I KNOW I have an intermittent Wheel Speed Sensor for the ABS, as I have the ABS light on.
Occasionally, I'll also get a flashing OD light on the shift lever and the speedometer will quit working.
Turning the key off and back on again causes the speedometer to work again for some reason.
