This is a new one for me. I have an 04 SD F250 6.0L diesel. I couldn't ask for it to run smoother at idle and most of the time while I'm pulling our TT. But...when I'm toodling along on a flat road with almost no throttle and I lightly acclerate to go up a slight incline, I can hear a difference in the tone of the engine and then it will develope a slight miss that is random and it will blow a little black smoke. I have also lost abourt 4-5 mpgs. Now, I can push down on the throttle and it will take off like no body's business and runs great. The reoccurance is becomming more often over the last month or so. Used to happen about once a month and it doesn't always do it now. The injectors have been replaced before I bought it and other than the occasional flutter and the lower MPGs, I have no complaints. Any ideas what to chase?
You need to get a scanning tool or app and look for codes, misfires, etc. can help you find the problem. What brand of injectors were installed. Some have a bad reputation for early failures
I have a similar issue, see my thread here. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/1547840-icp-sensor-readings-look-like-a-sawtooth.html
I have a new IPR on order that I'll install when it arrives Tuesday to see if that fixes it. Can you log data on forscan to see if you're getting the same type of ICP reading revving up in neutral when warm? If so, and you have no codes stored like me, you might have the same issue, and if IPR fixes mine, it might fix yours .
Did the IPR fix the problem? Something that I have noticed about mine is that whatever is failing is messing with the timing. It will have a substantial power loss, the tone of the engine will change and get quieter and it will blow excessive black smoke. Any ideas?
The new IPR valve made it a lot better but not perfect. It ran kinda ok with the ICP sensor disconnected before, and absolute crap with it connected. Now with the sensor connected, it runs as good or better than it ran with the sensor disconnected. I am going to drive it as is for a while and see how I feel about it.
Definitly check for Codes , most timing related sensors are Maff, Iat2, The Egr Valve if not deleted has TPS witch gives throttle response , when was the last time you did some clean up , anything in the Intake Manafold will get sooted up , I get the Map nipple , IAT2 , Egr valve for sure , while your cleaning may as well get the EBP sensors too.
I've been covered up lately but now its time to do something with the truck. I did check for codes and none showed up. I'm an auto gas mechanic but some of the things you've listed are unfamiliar to me. As far as I know, the EGR is still there and functioning and I was assured that the truck is completely stock. My manufacturers repair manual doesn't pull up some of the prementioned things. When you say to clean things up, are you saying to remove intake tubing and clean them out?

Things to do to make your intake sensors work properly as they get sooted up , in the tech folders are locations of each sensor I’m talking about, go to the home page 6.0 forum on the top of the list is the tech folders , once there find 6.0 Bible ,now the Egr Valve sits up front behind the radiator Cowl, two bolts twist while pulling upwards , i use a small flat bar to help pop it up ,if this haven’t been cleaned up you can do it with carb cleaner and a plumbers flux brush, next is the MAP,locates passenger side heater box , Three bolts , take the hose off the sensor and use it to help unthread the nipple in the intake, the sensor don’t need cleaning , it’s the hose and nipple that threads into the intake and intake hole , it’s very small and will cake up, IAT2 is behind the upper fuel and most likely the clip will break off , don’t worrie , carefully clean this with the brush , the sensors are inside and once cleaned up you’ll see it,
oh and always ware Safety glasses , carb cleaner burn like He#,

Thanks for the help. Looks like I know what's happening this weekend. I'll let everyone know the results. Carb cleaner in the eye?!?!? I thought that was one of those laws of physics or something. Nails me every time...even with safety glasses. Aaarrrrgggg!
