I don't know how much of a diesel newbie you are.
The most basic is to look for a diesel rated oil which has the API service ratings: CH-4, CI- 4 and SJ, SL. It must be rated at least CH-4 and SJ combined (these are the next to last API standards).
When I bought my vehicle used, I decided that if the previous owner's brand had gotten it 180,000 miles, it was good enough to stay with. R.A.
First off let me say welcome to the wonderful world of diesel
Rotella T 15-40 Is all I have ever used (I change my oil every 4000 miles and fuel filter)
also here are some other things to note
1). get fleetgaurd test strips and test you dca
you need to keep up with the coolant additive
2). service your crankcase depression regulator valve (recomended every 6000 miles) this will keep your head gaskets from blowing. you can tell if it needs servicing if there is oil on your air filter retaining bolt
3). don't buy fuel from a station if the tanker is their wait 8 hours after it stoped by buy fuel from a place that has a alot of trucks going through it chances are it will be good clean fuel don't buy when it raining wait a day or 2 after. I also use howes every 1000 miles to clean the fuel system lubercate the pump.
4). Only buy motorcraft glow plugs everything else is junk
( you dont want a tip break off in to the combustion chamber)

Cool. I'm playing heavy mechanic tonight on a buddy's Mack, and then we gotta look at his F-SuperDuty w/ a coolant leak. I'm gonna find this CDR thing and check it out.
Yeah, if the CDR (Crankcase Depression Relief) Valve has gummed up, it will cause oil to leak past the rear crankshaft oil seal.
I was told the seal would never hold again after having oil leak past it. Cleaned the CDR ( do it now every other oil change) and my rear seal leak stopped leaking.
The CDR is located between the Glowplug controller and the Intake. It is mounted in a rubber bushing going to the crankcase and is bolted to a rubber bushing at the intake. R.A.
I just remove the CDR from the engine and soak it in gasoline, then brush it with a tooth brush everywhere I can get to and make sure the spring plate isn't stuck to the outside of the valve. I let the gasoline evaporate completely before re-installing. R.A.
