I usually do it the second oil change... so about 8000 miles.... also somewhere after the first change I like to put a load on the truck with a trailer and make it work, get it good and hot to let everything bed in together.... lots of guys say that this is unnecessary, but thats what I do and have never had an oil consumption problem on any truck that I've owned, and I typically keep them 15 years or so before getting a new one....
First oil change, I cut over to 5W-40 Valvoline PBE. between 7000 and 7500 on the truck, was before it asked for a change, but I had a longer road trip coming up, and figured it was getting close.
I switched at my first oil change, and that coincided with the IOLM at about 8000 miles. The only recommendation I have seen recently from an oil manufacturer is Redline recommends not using their oil until after a 2-3000 mile break in.
I changed to 0-40 synthetic at my first oil change, 200 engine hours and 14,500 km (9,000 miles), up here in Canada, at the dealer I purchased it from I swear the engine runs quieter now than ever....didn't quite make it till the minder came on but had a few long trips so did it anyway.
I also got it "nice and hot", but at 1500 miles, borrowed a friends 10,000 lb trailer and used the throttle and found some hills.....which it didn't notice.....
My light came on to " change oil soon" at 3600 miles and I changed it to Rotella T6 synthetic 5w40 when it had 3679. I was a little surprised to see the light so soon but I figured it was because a lot of the miles were in the city on short trips. I probably could have waited a little longer but since I had the oil and filter I went ahead and did it.
To those of you who ran 10-30 MC per Ford and made the switch to full synthetic, whether 5-40 or 0-40, did you experience any change in fuel consumption whether good or bad?
i m at 11 K right now and will be due for a change around 15K. Thinking full synthetic would be good turbo insurance and also better cold weather flow as it s be cold in 4-5 mths. Mileage effect was my 3 rd consideration.
Never ... it's a big waste of money for me (as it is for most folks, but that doesn't stop them from doing it anyway).
Never here, too. I average only 6,000 miles/year and need to change it every year. So why spend the extra $$$ on synthetic for no measurable benefit? Oil never loses its lubricating qualities, it just gets dirty. They don't change the oil on large ship engines (I'm talking about diesels with 70' to 100' long crankshafts), they just continually clean and analyze the oil, then induce additives when needed.
Isn't the 'time' between oil changes another of the debatable oil issues? Kind of similar to Dino vs Synthetic.... some people argue that oil change intervals can go beyond 6 mths, or one year, etc if you re doing oil analysis. Guess a lot of this stuff is what you re comfortable with.
I know the difference in Dino vs Synthetic as far as $$$ can be whittled down quite a bit if you catch good sales.

Not really dabatable on these new Super Duty trucks. The oil life monitor will tell you to change it every 12 months regardless of mileage. There are several threads here that discuss buying a leftover 2017 only for the new owner to be told to change the oil a month or two afterwards with only a handful of miles on it ... and that's because 12 months have expired since its build date.
