Bought my first Ford truck in a long line of others. '95 F350 4-door 4x4 5.7L 102,xxx miles. Almost home with it 2.5 hours later and it goes into limp mode (hard shifting and OD light flashing). Speedo appears to be working normal. Cruise not working when I bought it so unknown if its related. Paperwork indicated 2k miles on rebuilt transmission (5 years ago, so it wasn't driven much off the farm). After it cools it seems to work fine, but when it gets up to operating temp it will go into limp mode again. Pulled codes and got 452 (VSS). Cheap part and quick job so I swapped it. Continues with the problem. Plug was clean. No obvious damage to wires. In fact, all the wiring/plugs I looked at have been clean and corrosion free. Previous owner said it happened to him once and he replaced Neutral Safety Switch and TPS, hasn't had any issues since. Tested TPS and it works as it should. Starts properly in park and neutral. Again speedo and odometer appear normal. Ideas before I start tracing wires?
Are you clearing the stored codes in the PCM memory?
If so and that code comes back I would try another PSOM.
But I have never heard of a PSOM that is heat or time in operation causing it to mess up.
Haven't cleared codes, but that's the only one that shows up. It runs fine for a while then goes into limp mode so it's clearly throwing a code again. Check it and that's the only one in stored memory
Ok. I replace the vss plug and exposed wiring. Reset codes. No change. It's definitely a heat sensitive issue. In the mornings it takes quite a while for it to limp. After its been run or in the afternoons, not so long. Any suspect plugs to check near engine block or tranny?
Maybe i spoke too soon. I got a fault with the speed control module unplugged today, but it took quite a while for that to happen. So i plugged it back in. When i drove it after changing the vss plug and wiring, it was with the scm plugged in. Got a fault almost immediately. On a whim i unplugged it again and drove it with the new wiring and the scm unplugged. A half hour with no faults.
If it continues to work, i guess i had both a bad scm AND vss plug. Two problems. Fingers crossed. I'll update in a few days.
