i have 2001 chevy pick up that the clearcoat is peeling real bad.it looks like crap.my buddy said that he would paint it if i did all the hard work.how do i go about this.this is just a daily driver.i am going to get a not bad paint job, like i said it is just an old driver.nothing fancy.i know that you guys are great with all of this stuff
No easy way to do it, a DA sander with 100 grit works well. The problem is that on the edges that are lifting there is no way to feather out the clear, it just keeps flaking. You can sand it back to where the clear still has a good bond and feather it out there. Once all the "dead" clear is removed then the truck can be sanded overall in prep for paint.
The main reason I wouldn't have base coat clear coat put on any restoration. But since it is beginning to lift, why not help it? Try taking your pressure washer to it? I'd aim at the place where the clear is beginning to lift so the stream gets between the clear and the base coat. What doesn't come off can be sanded. Start at a low setting.
You need to sand off ALL of the clear, everywhere. If it is not adhering in some spots now, it will not be adhering in other spots later.
I would power wash the truck to remove all dirt and crap, then wipe it down with wax and grease remover (DO NOT use mineral spriits, lacquer thinner, etc. as they will drive the contaminants into the paint!!). Then I would DA it all with 100/120/180 until I was seeing color in the sanding dust; that way I would be sure that all of the clear was removed. You will probably cut through the color here and there, maybe even to bare metal in spots-no problem. Once it is all sanded, wash it with wax and grease remover again. Then shoot a couple of coats of epoxy primer to seal up the old paint and cover any bare spots. Scuff that and paint.
Honestly, if you do any less than that you will be back in a few years crying about your new paint peeling off in sheets.
Yup hulley is right there is no easy solution the clear has to come off and in doing so allot of color will come with it . The color and type of paint you are going to use have some bearing on your prep work .
