I got bitten by a case of the "while I am at it", the underside of the truck has been wire brushed clean, primed, and painted. I don't know if the routing of the cable caused the initial issue, but now everything is running smooth with no binding and the gear is on the end of the cable still.
However, there is 2 new problems....i need to replace my tail shaft seal. (should've done it while everything was out) and my radiator has started seeping.
I plan on doing an ls swap in the near future so don't want to spend a ton to replace this one.

We just did a complete disassemble and rebuild on my 1965 F-100 three speed. We found no less than three speedo gears and the metal clips in the bottom of the output shaft housing. Truck is a recent purchase so who knows how long they were in there. The gears were all whole and not shredded.

I'm such an old guy. I guess the last guy to use a "measured mile" and an analog stop watch to verify speedometer accuracy disappeared right after the dodo bird reached extinction!
It never occurred to me to use a portable GPS to read speed over ground (SOG) to compare the mechanical truck speedometer reading. Sounds like you have the right gear combination.
I do have digital instruments ...I just have analog tendency disorder ATD. My wrist watch has hands that go round and round and I like it that way.
