so i got a rebuilt high torque mini starter that came out of a 351w. I was wondering if this will work with my 400? I saw on my current OE starter it has a 10tooth starter gear, however, my high torque starter has a smaller but bigger tooth 9 tooth starter gear.
im hoping this works for my truck, if not how hard is it to swap that gear to the correct one?
Not any longer apparently. Not only does Dorman have Ford starter shims on it's "HELP" racks now (for about the last ten years or so as far as when I first noticed) but more and more people are having to shim theirs.
Might be all the odd swaps being done, or it might be the sad state of affairs with the quality of the parts we get these days. So far I've never had to shim one, and none of my close friends have either. But I've had several customers and talked to forum members that have needed something because their (correct) starters did not work without a shim.
I realize this is a 400/460 discussion, and the shims are for the Windsor family, but it's a thing now so I thought I'd throw it out there.
