I just installed my 460 over the weekend. The 460 starter was shot so I used the 351m starter which fits fine. Has anyone else done this? My reason for asking this thing cranks very hard like timing is way advanced. I have checked several times with a light and its good. Is this 351 starter really that much weaker or what. I just dont want to lay out money for a 460 starter to have same problem. The 460 starter did have a gm type solenoid. Which I gather is a high torque type.
Specific 460 starter's have more torque? Can anyone truly confirm this? I have the same problem with my 460, but I just thought that I had a somewhat weak battery. If it's the starter, then I guess I'll be achangin' that too.
Not only does the 460 starter look different from most other 79's Ford starters, it IS different. There is a different bendix drive system attached to it, integral to the drive housing on the front. The other Ford starters have the teardrop 'bump' cover over this portion. I just replaced my flywheel and gear drive, since both were chewed so bad that the truck just wouldn't find enough teeth to start! I had to rotate by hand (tough job with that compression!) until I hit a set of 'decent' teeth!
Yes, I am sure the 351 starter would fit, since the 460 and 351M/400 share transmissions. But, I'm afraid the 351 starter may be a little lacking, especially on a warm start. Even my old 460 starter is a little sluggish when hot. You may have to spend the 50 bucks on a rebuilt starter and give them your core, or have a reputable shop rebuild your original.
