I've been trying to track down a growling hum type of noise. Also a very slight vibration in my floorboard under my feet. Checked u joints, they seemed fine, almost new. Ball joints seemed fine. Carrier bearing, also checks out. Jacked the truck up, no play in wheels that I could find. Can tires cause the noise and vibration? They were balanced when mounted 2500 miles ago. Seems worst at 25 and 45. I have Cooper discoverer stt pros.
Rotate the tires and see what that does. If the noise changes, then it’s presumably the tires. If it is, check the tread to see if they’re wearing relatively equally. If they were out if balance, you’d feel shaking/vibrations in the steering wheel or brakes.
The last time I had a humming noise like that (kind of like the warning strips on the side of the highway if you start drifting off the road) it was the needle bearing in my hub.
In my experience, worn wheel bearings are the usual cause of ‘tire noise’. Get it off the ground, remove the wheel and turn the hub by hand. You’ll hear it if the bearings need replacing.
It seems that on my passenger side front the shaft has a little in and out play in it. Sixteenth of an inch maybe at most. Would this be needle bearing related? The puter seal is slid out on this side. The assembly doesn't not move up and down though. I also found that the passenger side needs new calipers but I'll fix that when I resolve the play. I attached a picture of what I'm looking at.
