I was wondering if steering wheel-mounted radio controls were offered for 1999. My "99 Explorer Xlt doesn't have them. We're they offered on other Ford/Mercs? And last, could I feel fit? Thanks.
Yeah, they were available in 1999. I'm pretty sure it was an option on the Explorers. It was available on the Mountaineers and there wasn't much available on the Mountaineer that wasn't also available in the higher level trims of the Explorer.
You probably could retrofit, but considering how many different components you'd need to add for the stereo that works with the steering wheel controls you'd probably be better off to go with an aftermarket stereo and wireless remote. Or, the placement of the stereo is pretty accessible so if you go with a modern stereo there may not be much benefit to adding steering wheel controls.
