ANOTHER Purchase Advice Thread - 01 X LTD

I have been out of the Blue Oval game for quite a while... Since my 92 F-150 (that may still be in my signature).

My last two trucks have worn Bowties (a 96 LS and currently an 06 Z71 Suburban) which I have been happy with, but have always admired the X as the ultimate tow rig and family hauler.

(I've got an 02 GTI as a commuter and the wife has a Saturn Outlook that we've decided to run until it dies.)

Which got me thinking again... (I have severe project vehicle ADD.)

I came across a very nice looking 01 Limited about 75 miles from me that really caught my attention .

The next two replies are my questions to the seller and his replies.

Along with pics.

Look forward to your thoughts, opinions and guidance .

Cmc

Do you have records for the upgrades and preventative maintenance over the years?

Has it had any engine/drivetrain issues?

Ever have issues with the exhaust manifold studs rusting out or spark plug thread failures ?

(Common issues on the Triton V10... They would "spit out" plugs if not torqued perfectly. )

At 100k+ miles front end, steering and suspension components are about the end of their useful life.

Have shocks, ball joints, drag link, tie rod ends, u-joints, steering damper, etc been addressed?

When was the last time brake pads and rotors were replaced? Brake lines?

Definitely interested in speaking with you about it.

Any pictures you have, inside, outside, underside, etc would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi Chuck,

Yes, we have owned this since new.

We have performed all scheduled maintenance at or ahead of the Ford schedule. For example, Ford says the oil change interval for the V10 Excursion is 5,000 miles. We have changed it every 3,000 at Jiffy Lube. We have made it a point to use the same oil each and every time - Penzoil 5W20.

We have every receipt for all service and maintenance done.

We have not had any issues with exhaust studs or spark plug threads. The plugs were replaced at 100,000 miles and all ten coils replaced shortly thereafter.

The front end components were replaced twice. I don't have my receipts with me at the moment, but I think the first replacement was at about 80-90,000 with non-Ford parts. The second time was fairly recently with Ford parts.

The brakes were done at about 80,000, then again just this year at a Ford dealer with new pads, rotors, front calipers and some front brake lines. Also new shocks at that time.

We have had only minor mechanical issues over the years. It has needed the fuel pump replaced twice. The last time was last year, also at a Ford dealer. Several years ago the left front wheel would not engage in 4WD. I think it was the hub lock? It was fixed at a Ford dealer.

It has been garaged most of its life, but occasionally sits in the driveway. Unfortunately, we have had tree branches fall on it twice while in our driveway. Once last year and once this year. Last years damage dented the hood and left front fender. These were replaced with new Ford parts. This year another branch dented the roof. This has not been repaired. I have attached a photo of the dents. The roof dents are not visible from the ground because of the height of the roof, but you should know about them before you consider this vehicle. And yes, we did cut down the tree that was causing the problem.

We have the Ford maintenance manuals.

You think it's only worth $6k?

Even as an original owner with complete maintenance records?

Everything I find $6k and less has 200k, or no maintenance history, or multiple owners, or at a sketchy used car dealer.

Or the owners think their X is made of gold and want $15-20k+ for them.

If I go check it out, I was thinking $7k, but willing to go to $8k .

I owe $4k on my Burb, I could get $8-9k for it if I sell it myself.

What makes you think only $6k?

I see interesting examples, but also $7k for more miles with unknown history and some questionable mods (those rims and headlights?) on a "rust belt" rig .
The 04 for $9k with 95k miles looks like it could be a good deal. It's in Ohio too though.

And the one in NC is actually reasonably close enough to me to consider... Until I saw "5.4".

Dayum Pirate... That is a great deal.

Hard to find one like that here in VA and the surrounding area.

Don't like going North of B'awltmore cause the rust creeps in.
And anything South of NC starts turning in to a 2-day trip .

If this rig is planned to be in your family for a few years, making a little trip to get the "right" salt and rust free one is WELL WORTH the time. Any rust to the extent of metal loss is a deal breaker for any used vehicle for me. Heck, my old Geo Metro (I love those little crappy cars!) got rusty so I hunted down a rust free '94 in Savannah GA (I'm near Philly) to replace it, a day to drive down and another day back up to bring home the best $650 car I've ever owned!

I got very lucky and found my EX at a dealer here in PA, they had just bought it at auction in LA where the Army Corps of Engineers had retired it at 65K miles, so it was salt and rust free.

To be honest, $9k for that is only about $1000 high for me here in greater Cincy/Indy areas. but that Service history and lack of rust though... In my opinion, the service history justifies paying a premium for it.

WE3ZS - Oh, I agree. I spent the first 35 years of my life in NJ/NY/NE... once the cancer starts it can't be stopped. So if it's even got paint bubbling from rust I am out.

PHOENIX - The service history and the original owner are the biggest selling points for me.

Found a couple more that are worth looking in to, at the same or lower price points / mileages.

I'll try to post some links or info
