I've had really good luck with REDLINE MTL in my Jeep. The transmission runs cooler. My guess is Dad is old school and that new fangled synthetic fluid is never going to be as good as the old stuff that came directly from squeezing a dinosaur corpse.

Mercon V may have been the demise of your transmission. I don't want to start any rumors or misconceptions, but they came with Mercon originally and is what I use on the trucks at work (Dexron III/Mercon specification). Remember the big thing a couple years ago with exploding transfer cases? Same deal. The ambulance here had that issue a couple months ago.

Bummer. This is what I have been using. https://www.citgolubes.com/do/produc..._HIGH_VISC_ATF

I'll call the shop here and see what they plan to use.

I don't know what the trans had in it when I bought my truck, but the gear roll over was bad, very bad.

I spent a lot of coin on amsoil products and changed every oil or lube I could with them. The trans got better right away with amsoil atf, but even better with the redline mtl.

I have redline mtl in the transfer case as well.

As for the shop, you could have whatever fluid you wanted sent in to the Koa or shop to be used when the trans is installed.

Redline MTL

Before that I had Amsoil ATF synthetic and it did OK too. The Redline reduced gear roll over to almost nothing.

Ok so that is the 75/80 mtl

What are you using ? From the little I have looked in stores anything I have seen that says mercon also says mercon V. If I'm understanding you I want something dexron iii mercon but does not state mercon v correct?

Edit. Here is what I am used to seeing on the label.

CITGO TRANSGARD Multi-Vehicle High-Viscosity ATF contains the highest quality synthetic base stocks combined with a state of the art additive system to provide superior performance in automatic and powershift transmissions. It is suitable for use in transmissions calling for Ford MERCON®-V, Ford MERCON®(obsolete), General Motors DEXRON®-IIIH (obsolete), and Allison C-4 type fluids. Do not use CITGO TRANSGARD Multi-Vehicle High-Viscosity ATF in vehicles calling for Type F, DEXRON®-VI, MERCON®-SP, MERCON®-LV, Toyota/Lexus WS, and CVT's. Consult owner's manual for fluid specification.

One final thought from me:

Make damn sure they flush the cooler and check the flow. It does go through the radiator just like an automatic transmission and it will get your transmission temperature through the freaking roof if there's no flow.

Per the site auto transmission guru, Mark K, they haven't made regular Mercon since 2006, only Mercon V. I will say that there are still bottles out there saying regular Mercon, as I just bought some, but it may all actually be Mercon V, just labeled as regular Mercon.

The NAPA lubricant is not a synthetic though right? At least I could not find anything saying it was.

Perhaps this is your best bet since there is probably a NAPA in that town and that is the fluid the original speciation called for.

I would recommend changing it more often than a synthetic though, which I am sure you are aware of.

I don't see your comments as rumors as you have been using the NAPA Mercon for a while. Based on face value, it is a fact, not speculation.

Are you using the new XL-12 for the transfer cases on the vehicles you maintain?

It should ship empty per motor carrier regulations but who knows what will happen.

I changed it twice. Once when I did the clutch at 25000 and again at 270000 ish. Was going to change it before I left but just topped it off instead. About 18900 on it currently. Well before they drained it today.

Called and talked to the shop here. Someone is going to pull it out tonight so that they can check out the clutch. They said mercon v is what they usually see called for by the trans builder but will check the tag or call when they get it. They always follow what the builder calls for unless the owner wants something else.
