I replaced my Radiator a while back and I had my truck running and noticed that one of the radiator overflow tubes was leaking. It is the one with a rubber cap clamped on. My fix was a new piece of hose with a bolt stuck into it with clamps. My original radiator had only one overflow tube that was connected to the overflow tank. I was thinking that maybe the top tube is for an overflow? So am I right in having that top tube clamp closed? A vent?
What year is your truck? I believe that the additional connection on the radiator is for slightly older models that have the throttle body lines connected there which run across the top of the radiator. The coolant overflow should be connected to the upper one above the radiator cap seal.
Mine is a 1992 with the EFI 460. Since the one I replaced didn't have the second tube I guess the replacement radiator is kind of a fit all kind of a thing. everything lined right up and went together real easy. I looked into the radiator and the two tubes are behind a kind of filler neck, so you cant actually touch the holes. I figure the bottom one is for the return to the overflow tank otherwise it would just lose all the coolant out the open tube. Someone on another site mentioned the top being a vent but the system is under pressure so that doesn't make sense.
The idea of using the bottom tube with some kind of preheater makes sense if my truck had such a thing.
