Hi guys, need some advice or tips. I have a 1966 F350 with a 300 CID. Last week it started running rough. Sputtered some, back fired, then finally lost power. I was able to nurse it to a mechanic shop. He replaced the condenser and it ran fine on Monday. Last night I went to start it and it wouldn't start. It just kept turning over and nothing. I thought maybe I flooded it out so I waited until this afternoon. Again it wouldn't start. I cleaned all of the plugs which were really fouled out. They are 3 month old plugs. Anyhow, reinstalled them and still nothing. The ol' guy just won' crank. The mechanic at the shop told me that if the condenser goes out again that it could be the voltage regulator is throwing out to much current, thus cooking the condenser. This is possible as this is the third condenser in 6 months.
Should I replace the voltage regulator and condenser? Any thoughts would be appreciated.
or the points may have slipped, and of course don't forget the coil, especially if it's an aftermarket brand...
JMO, but from what I've seen, quality control of condensers and points seems pretty poor these days. Once you've got it running, you might think about upgrading from points and condenser to a Pertronix or Pertronix II. You'll love it.
Condensers are usually pretty cheap. I would try replacing it and if it runs, do what Dave suggests and check the voltage while the engine is running. Should be around 14 volts or so. If the voltage goes up and down a lot with engine rpm, then the regulator is bad. They are usually pretty inexpensive, too.
Great advice guys! I did put the new condenser on yesterday and it fired right up as soon as I turned the key. I will go ahead and get the voltage regulator changed out as well. I am not familiar with the Pertronix. Is that an easy install? Here is a look under my distributor cap. The install of the Pertronix module looks simple. Thanks! Dave

Just wanted to close the loop on this thread. I did install the Pertronix 1261 on my truck yesterday. It was a fairly easy install. Hank fired right up. I appreciate the recommendation on the Pertronix upgrade. I had no idea changing to electronic ignition was that easy. Have a great Sunday! Dave
