They used to have emissions inspections in MN, run by the State (not private garages). They realized, that 98%+ of all vehicles passed. The ones that did not pass, were the vehicles of the voters of the party that wanted inspections in the first place. The people that did not have money had the worst cars. Go figure. And you can't take away a poor persons car just because they are polluters.

So after about five years, they quit the inspections and knocked down all the new inspection buildings.

Mark this as the first thing New York has right.
Except half the time the computer system they plug a vehicle into for inspections is down or has incorrect info on the vehicle.

Yes the insanity doesn't stop here in the Commonwealth.
Now the inspection stations are required to have a 5 camera system to record the inspection.

What do they look for on window tint? We don't have annual inspections here in Cali, if they did they'd take most of the cars off the road, and catch thousands for illegal window tint, many have privacy tint on the front side windows.

Windows immediately to the right and left of the driver that have less than 25% light transmission will fail inspection, regardless of the year model of the vehicle.

its only illegal if they catch you

The Colorado front range (east of the Rocky Mountains) has emissions testing but not safety inspections. The emissions test can be as simple as driving down the on-ramp to get on the highway. Pass that test a couple times and you're good to go. Fail that test or don't go past one often enough and you have to take it in for an actual test that is going to cost you $25 as I recall. I think the diesel trucks require a special emissions test that isn't done by the standard testing location. I'll know for sure here in a couple years. In Colorado, new diesel vehicles are exempt from emissions testing (aka Diesel Opacity Inspection Program) for 4 years, then get retested every two years until 10 years old after which they get tested every year. That's incentive to trade in just about the time my extended warranty expires.

I really hope to be out of the Colorado front range - even better, out of Colorado altogether! - by the time my truck has to be tested.

We still have emissions testing in NW Indiana for the same reason, and repeated evidence that the pollution is all coming in from IL is ignored. Luckily vehicles over 9000 GVWR are exempt but it's still annoying to take the cars in every other year.

Texas is a property tax state. We don't tax income of any sort, including pensions and retirement funds. Usually for retirees, an income tax state is more desirable since theoretically what you own free and clear by that point in life is more valuable than your income. If you save up for your entire career, then come here and drop all that money on the retirement property of your dreams, you'll be on the hook for a substantial chunk of change every year until you die. Then someone else will have to start paying that bill. Depending on where you drop anchor, that could be as much as 4-5% of the property value annually.

emissions and such are not part of diesel inspections in TX. We are safety only for those vehicles in all counties, and for all vehicles in most counties. i.e. the more rural areas are safety only no matter what. Only in the big cities are emissions required for any vehicles. Diesels are exempt from emissions testing even in big cities.

EDIT:: I forgot to mention that vehicles less than 2 years old are exempt from emisisons *and* safety inspections. Vehicles over 24 years old are safety only. It's really not that bad.

Hope to be out of here in a few years!!! (say a prayer for me!)

So, you have to explain it to them and hope they get it. Your best bet is just run down to Marcotte Commercial Truck Center. Best Ford service in the area and certainly no problem doing inspections on SD's.
HA! Never thought of Marcotte. I drive by their shop everyday on my way to work..... thanks for the reminder.
