IDI in an 88 bronco

I have a chance to buy an 88 bronco with no engine for real cheap, I would like to put an idi in it if it's worth doing. I have always really liked Broncos but have also always found their original engine choices to be lame at best, so an idi is the obvious choice. I am sure I would have to beef up the suspension and I actually have a 3/4 ton ttb axle from an 89 f250 I could use with a few modifications. Also I have a diesel c6 and I think an np208 transfer case and a vrv to make the c6 work with the diesel. The one thing I no longer have is a good engine to go in it so I would have to find another one. So what else would I need to make it work and is it worth messing with. Thanks for any info

After reading the linked articles and a few more I have pulled the trigger and bought the 88 bronco with no engine or trans, I am thinking about using a relatively stock 94 factory turbo engine to begin with and if I can find one I can afford. I am in need of a few small pieces to get started if anyone has them, I need the half of the motor mount that bolts directly to the frame, an 87-91 diesel tach or a whole diesel cluster either one and a down pipe for the factory turbo or a source for a new one. Pictures to follow

The mounts bolt directly to the k-member. It only uses an upper mount no lower.

You'll have to make your own plate and weld it to the k-member.

Since this was a half ton application I'm not sure if everything will already have similar angles like the 3/4 and 1 ton gas to diesel conversions but others have definitely found a way in the broncos and f-150's

There are 2 stamped steel plates one on each side that bolt to the cross member with 4 bolts each then the motor mount bolts to them. I know 83-91 had them I don't know if 92 up idi trucks had them or not. I had a set for years that I had saved for just this purpose but they are nowhere to be found now. You are correct about the angles on the half ton chassis being different, the passenger side is really close to the same but the driver side requires some modifications to work correctly. I read a couple of articles that even recommend swapping to a cross member for one from an idi truck but due to the fact that it reeks of effort I will be keeping my current cross member.

Got my zf and transfer case yesterday, it came with most everything I need I will just have to figure out the rear drive shaft! Anybody have template for drilling the holes in the firewall to mount the clutch master cylinder that you would be willing to share?

Very cool! Wish I could have found something like that while I was looking for a truck.

Picked up this 87 f350 4x4 for parts fo the bronco, has a reman 6.9 that has not been in there long enough to even be dirty and runs great considering that Saturday was the first time in 15 years it ran.

4x4, dually, straight axle, idi?

That truck is a thing' in and of itself..

I'd keep it, and tear up some poop brown, Swiss cheese clapper for an engine.

My 2c, but my 2c didn't buy it so do what you will, I like bronco's.
