Howdy fellas. Just got done doing an injector cup job on my 02 7.3. Everything went pretty smooth. Finally got it started up and I am currently in the process of doing a coolent flush and the three or four times I have started it the truck to cycle the cooling system the truck has been really hard to start. Takes ten seconds of cranking before it finally starts. Seems kind of strange. The truck prior to this project wouldn’t start at all and would only crank. Not sure if any correlation.
Also, I have gone on a couple short drives up and down the street in doing this coolent flush and my exhaust temperature has been skyrocketing as soon as I start to drive. Seems exesive even though only have water in cooling system. Even noticed a little bit of oil coming from exhaust after I park the truck.
Any ideas? Just don’t want to drive it more until I get this figured out.
Thanks

you might have some boost leaks, but i smell the turbo going south. Oil coming out the exhaust generally means the turbo needs rebuilding or replacing. You can check the turbo by pulling off the the intake tube to the turbo and checking for play on the compressor wheel. Side to side play is not good. Some in and out is okay.
Yeah the oil made me think turbo also. Checked for play and everything seemed pretty good. Relatively new turbo and hadn’t had any oil in exhaust prior to this project. Maybe an injector o ring got messed up when seating them back in? Not sure
I'm not going to the turbo so fast, the injector cup swap may need 100 miles for everything to clean up and run right... But the EGTs are a concern. How high is high?
You should put new o-rings on the injectors if you have to remove them and put them back in. Depending on how well the oil was removed from the system before it was put back together, some oil in the exhaust, smoke under acceleration, delayed starting, and even high EGT's (oil coated the temp probe) could all just come from pulling the injectors.

I sure hope it is as easy as that. I did replace all the o rings when I pulled them.
I would keep an eye on things but not get too nervous untill a few hundred miles are under the truck's belt.
As F350-6 mentioned it will take some time to work all the air out of the high pressure oil system. A good rule of thumb is about 100 miles. A little less if you drive it like a rental car and a little more if you drive it like you have to pay for repairs.
The hard start didn't go away until a little over 200 miles.
Once things smooth out I would start looking at things that haven't normalized.
