OK, so I am forced to replace my oem locking hubs on my 01 f250. The drivers side hub will not unlock, even when I get it in the auto position, and I about trashed the plastic dial trying to get it there. A piece of rubber o-ring was trying to escape out the seam between the dial and the hub and binding things up. Its all screwed up. When I first got it back to the auto position, it partially unlocked, but was ratcheting. Put it back to lock and back to auto thinking that would help, but now it won't unlock at all. So I am going to ditch the stock hubs and buy warn premium hubs. But how to get the stock ones off? I initially tried taking it apart thinking I could clean the stock ones, but I only got as far as taking the big snap ring off. Nothing would budge.
Well I guess they're just really stuck in there. I was persuading them pretty good, but maybe not enough. I'll have at it again tonight. Would the fact that the one side is locked make it more difficult to remove?
I would suggest raisng the truck to take the weight of the truck off the hub.
Then try the above mentioned procedures
Thus chk your wheel bearings could also have a problem if the auto hubs haven't been releasing.
when the wheelbearings start to wear the auto locking hubs start to stick because things get sloppy and dirt gets in .
One of my hubs didn't come out it was corroded to death. It took me 4 hours of drilling and slide hammering to get the sucker out. I hope thats not your case cause it was unbelieveable.

OH my God!!!!!!
Hot wrench that sucker ,NOT ,don't do that.
So are these the infamous wheel bearings that can't be repacked and just have to be replaced?
Great. Guess I should get the replacement hubs before I remove the stock ones.
I also believe that I have to pull the front axle shafts because the two seals (one on either side of the u-joint) are not seated. I think this is the root cause of the hub problem. Is this a terribly difficult job?
Looked at a friends 01 f-250 and she had the seal problem on her truck. Anybody else have this on the later rigs?
Yes these are the non -repackable wheel bearings.
But its not always a conclusion ,that you need to replace the hubs, just a good dose of using them and sometimes cleaning them wil help .
The f150 use a cvc joint shaft and a different style seal that pushes against a cup plate (for a lack of the correct name) .
Where the SD has a pressed in seal.
Thanks Dick (memories of Newhart come to mind, especially with the VT location).
So I guess you replaced your ball joints? Was it a pain in the *** or what? Weekend job type thing if you have all the parts? I just need to get the axle shafts out and to the dealer to press the new seal in place (I hope). That and new locking hubs, caused I trashed the plastic **** on the stock ones trying to muscle it.
Oh well, besides this one headache (knock on wood) I love the truck.
Lynonville is 10 m north of st johnsbury on rt 91....way up hea.
I made a tool I'll lend you to put the seal on and then push into the knuckle. You pay postage.
You should have a big vise to hold the shafts though.
Ball joints are ok if you have all the right tools and air wrench. and experience as a mechanic. Otherwise have someone else do it..
The hub you trashed was junk to start so don't feel bad. Did you get it out?
Thanks for the tool loan offer. Heavy? I may take you up on it. Won't be till mid October though. Going to europe for a couple weeks w/my wife for our 1st anniversary. Awww.
I will e-mail you off list about details if thats ok.
I have to get into it this weekend and see exactly what I need to fix. Fiendly biker neighbor has a nice big vice, and air tools for when the time comes to pull the shafts.
Didn't get the the locking hub apart yet. Had to go surf yesterday (priorities). Next chance is friday. So it goes.
