Regear Question/Help

Gents - I’m needing to regear. Current setup is 2004 F250 CCLWB 4x4 4” lift w 35” tires and 3.73 gears. Truck is not my daily driver—used for boat & UTV towing, hunting & camping trips out west, etc.

I tow a 6K boat and this truck is searching for gears often and doesn’t have much get up and go.

I’m planning on keeping the 35s & I’m wanting to be around a 4.30 gearing. Local shop recommends Yukon gears—what Yukon ratio gears do I need to be around 4.30?

4.88s or 5.13s?
thanks!

4.30 gears are 4.30 ratio no matter what brand, but with your setup I would get 4.56 or 4.88 gears.

doesn't running the 35s dork the final equivalent ratio up? That larger tire makes the ratio higher.

I'm wanting to get to 4.30 w 35s...wasn't sure which one would get me closest

So you want what would be equivalent to stock tires with 4.30 gears? You would need 4.88s then.

Seems like you’re more interested in the number than the result.
Maybe you are thinking miles ahead though.

The important question to ask is what rpm do you intend to run at your highest (usual) speed?
Because the only downside of gears is that you might accidentally go “too big”. So why not just do the math to find “too big” and then step backward from there.

Do you run on the highway much at speeds above 60? If so the 4.56 may be a better option. Mine is regeared to something pretty steep, (guessing 5.13s or so, was done by PO so I’m not sure). I’m at 2000 rpms at 45 mph in overdrive. That being said, I use mine mainly for towing at speeds 65 and under. At 65 I’m up around 2800 rpms.

You either have smaller than 35" tires, aren't in overdrive or have much lower than 5.13 gears. 4.88 gears with 35s will put you at 2400 rpm at 70 mph.

The term for what you are talking about is "effective ratio". For an effective 4.30 ratio with 35" tire's you will need the 4.88 gears.
I run 35.28" tires with 4.88 gears behind my 2V V-10 and tow an 11,300lb TT with it, the deeper gears made it like a completely different rig, much better!

they could be 5.38s. Tires are 35 and it’s in overdrive as when I take od off it shifts out of it. In 2nd around 45mph I’m about 4500 rpm. This is where it’s been towing up the larger passes lately when towing my camper.
this is what I’m towing. I’m seriously thinking about selling the 35s with 20s setup and going with some 17x9 0 or -6 offset wheels and 37s. Right now they are 20x10 negative offset wheels and I would like more sidewall.
Anyone know if 0 offset 9 inch wide wheels would work with a 6 inch lift? I don’t want them to stick out as much which is why I want less offset and to allow fitmemt of the 37s.
Heres what I tow

National chain shop or local? What are they charging if you don’t mind. I want to drop to 4.56 if I keep my 35s

This thread has been helpful. I've got a '99 F350 6.8L that I use to tow a 9,500lb TT, and usually have about 1,200lbs of toys and gear in the bed of the truck. I continually hunt for the right gear unless I'm on flat road with the wind behind me. Currently running a 33" tire (stock is 31.6"), but I'm switching soon to a 34.5", so I'm planning to regear my diffs. I've been trying to decide between the 4.56 and the 4.88, sounds like the 4.88 will give me the effective ratio close to 4.30 that I'm looking for.

WE3ZS, would you do anything differently to your gearing after the 6.8L V10 with 35" tires and 4.88s? My setup will be nearly the same. Anything you'd do differently if you were to do it again?
