Tie rod replacement

I am about to replace both left and right outer tie rods on '04 F350 4x4 and everything I have read has said I need to use a Pitman Arm puller.
Will a normal 2-jaw gear/pulley puller work? Don't want to start, only to have the puller I have not work for me.

I use a big hammer, a fork works good too, if you want to use a puller then yes you need a Pittman arm puller.

I always just used a “Pickle Fork” to do mine. If you have an air chisel they sell a fork for them and they are easier.

I just use a hammer, but don’t pound on the top of the bolt.
Smack the side of knuckle where the ball joint passes thru. It distorts the shape of the hole and the hold it has on the tie rod.
It may take a few hard hits, a bit of pb blaster never hurt either.

I changed our Excursion tie rod ends with this separator which worked great.
I like it better than the forks I have used.
I have also used just a hammer, but be sure to remove the nut first or position it at the end of the threads.
If the the threaded end gets mushroomed from hammer blows the nut may not come off.

Thanks for the input yall. It was much easier than I thought. Just used a hammer and barely had to hit it all. Just a quick rap, and off they came.
