Ok this may be a dumb question but here it is. On the engine oil dipstick on my truck it has hash marks and then a little line a little above that. Is the full level at the top of the hash marks or at the little line that is a little bit above the hash marks?
Not intending to sound like a wise guy, but your truck's engine doesn't care where the oil level is, as long as its on the hash marks. Anywhere on the hash marks is considered the "safe range". My OCD kicks in and I need to get it right to the top of the hash marks, but only to see if I experience any oil consumption between changes.

I fully understand that. The reason I am asking is that I only put a little over 12 qts in and the oil level is up past the hash marks to the line above it. And I did let the oil drain for quite a while so it shouldn't be because I didn't get it all drained.

That's interesting because I need the full 13 to get to the top of the dipstick. I used a Motorcraft filter if that makes any difference???

My take from the OM is that the line (mark) above the hash mark field is the maximum oil level line with the 6.2 L engine at normal operating temperature. An oil level in the hash mark field is supposed to be OK, but I like to keep mine near the MAX line.
Instructions for the 6.7 say the NOT oil level should be between the MAX and MIN marks.
One thing that may make a difference is that I'm checking mine after it sits all night. The manual says to run it to operating temp and then let it sit 15 min. I'll try that and see where it is.
Well I did like it says in the manual and mine was just above the hash marks. This was with about 12.5 qts. This makes me think that maybe the top of the hash marks isn't the "full" mark but that the line above the hash marks is the actual "full" mark and that 13 qts would probably put it right about there.
i know that it doesn't really make much difference but I can be OCD like someone else said earlier.

I say as long as its visible on the stick and not above the machined hole on the top you are good. With variances in manufacturing my guess is each dipstick could be off slightly from another...

yeah. I'm sure it doesn't have to be perfect. I would say there is a good chance they get overfilled a little when getting changed at dealers and other service centers because I'm sure they don't get to let them drain for very long. And then more than likely they put in the 13 qts it calls for and call it good.

Focusing on the amount you added here (12 qts). You did not mention whether or not you changed the filter.
It depends on was the oil hot or cold when drained. How long did you let it drain. Did you check oil level before starting truck after oil added, did you let it run until warm then let it sit a few minutes. All this comes in effect on oil level. I like to learn my oil level when cold, when hot and just shut off, hot then shut off with wait period.

I changed the oil when it was hot and it drained for probably 20 mins or longer. and I did change the oil filter.
I think in my case it depends on what the actual full mark is. If its the top of the hash marks, mine was full with about 12.5 qts. If it's the line just above the hash marks, 13 qts would probably be about right on, (You can see the line above the hash marks I'm talking about in the picture I posted earlier in this thread.)
