crew cabs everywhere
crew cabs everywhere
Been lurking on various dealer's websites checking out their inventories. I understand that pickups are the new minivan especially in the 1/2 tons. But why can't a single guy find a simple super cab. For every super cab i find there is at least 20 crew cabs. Are super cabs that popular that there are just a few leftovers? I don't need or want the huge crew cab. My current truck is a regular cab, so even a super cab will be huge compared to it.
I think you do not see many SCs on the lots because the dealers do not order many, most want a CC now it seems. I almost bought a leftover 17 SC, had been on the lot over a year but I was not happy with the discount offered for a year old truck.
Dimensions and trim level availability affect the super cab vs crew cab configuarion matrix.

- The super cab long bed wheel base (~164”) and overall length are longer than the crew cab short bed (~160” WB). To some, the smaller-cab SC LB truck is larger overall but may not be versatile as the CC SB.
- The highest trim level available on a super cab is Lariat Value; the Lariat Ultimate, King Ranch, Platinum and Limited trims are CC only. This split may affect what you see on dealer lots.
- IIRC, the SC LB 6.2 4x4 is the SRW payload king!
- Special ordering gets you exactly the truck you want.

My theory is supercabs are dying out in part because smaller builders/tradesmans are dying out...
IMO The main appeal of supercabs is having the french style doors that are more functional as a mobile office and tool stashing setup. Now most bosses rarely touch a tool and the workers are in XLs.
This is also partly why trucks are extremely high, to high to function well as a work truck. The guys that make the decisions on truck buying aren't the ones having to lift that air compressor 2 feet higher than normal every day.....

When I was looking, I couldn't find a Lariat SCSB within 500 miles of Louisville - ordered mine. I just didn't need a CC, and it wouldn't fit in my garage.
I regularly see XL and XLT SuperCab LBs locally. They seem popular with small contractors. I was at a local wholesale landscaping place picking up a load of garden soil recently and a local landscaper pulled up in his XLT supercab long bed. He got out and walked straight to my truck and looked it over pretty closely. We talked about his and the difference in the CC and SC. He said he would have preferred a CC but really didn't want the extra length. He needs the maneuverability. His was a 6.2, mine is a 6.7.
One of my friends, lives one street over from me, bought a very nice XLT Premium that is a 6.2, SC, SB, FX4, in Ruby Red, with the center console. Very nice truck and had me trying to decide between a Lariat and an XLT Premium. I don't think you could buy a nicer truck for less money. His stickered nearly 20 grand less than mine.

The 6.7 diesel alone is about $9K of the sticker difference. Assuming the Lariat mentioned above included the Ultimate Package, that was an expensive upgrade for MY2017 because it included the moonroof.

I had a hard time finding a SC LB Lariat, what made it even harder was finding one without the full center console as I needed the option to seat 6 in the truck when our nieces and nephews come to visit for a month during the summer. That cut my options from about 65 trucks within 200 miles down to 3.
