Have a 2000 F150 V8 4.6 with the 8.8 differential. I had to replace a few things in the rear end: bearings, axle seals, disc brakes and parking brakes and swapped out dif. fluid (with additive). Everything seemed to be fine until I turned on truck and put it into drive. I heard a terrible sound like running over sheet metal for a few seconds and then it stopped. Truck was still in drive but would not move forward. Put it in reverse for a second and heard same sound and immediately put it in neutral. Went under truck while still in neutral, driveline spinning and making a bad sound like it was off balance. Shut everything off, jacked truck up. Realized that as I turned the rear wheel in neutral the driveline was not moving. Isn't it supposed to? I'm really not sure what I did wrong but any help would be appreciated - thanks.
if you can turn the drive shaft and the tires are on the ground, then either the axle half shafts are not engaged on the spline ( how?) the pinion/ ring gear are not engaged (?) or the planetary gears were not installed or pinned in place.
OK, it sounded like you also saw the drive shaft moving when the truck was setting still.......... with BOTH tires off the ground and you turn ONE WHEEL, the OTHER WHEEL should turn in the opposite direction, and the driveshaft will not move...
BUT big noises are not good....... I would still remove the cover and LOOK.
Axle bearings at the wheel. Didnt even know there was more. And no, when I turn one wheel the other doesnt move. I was hoping not to have to open diff again but guess theres no choice. Thanks
OK, when you pulled the axles out to get the bearings off, you removed a snap ring and may have pulled a 1/2 inch pin that locates a couple planetary gears ?? Something didn't go back together right if the wheel turns and the gears don't... look inside while you turn the wheel.
