i bought a nice 1979 F100 shortbed but it’s got the Dana 44 rear, I’m looking to replace it with a 9’ rear end and im wanting to know if any companies make or sell a 9’ axle housing for 73-79 ford trucks, I’m striking out on the few salvage yards around my area and occasionally on CL. I will find one with some slack jawed yokel getting offended when I tell him what I’d offer for his gold plated rusted out junk, I’m having no luck on my google search as well if anyone knows where I can find an 9’ axle housing for these trucks I would appreciate the link. Thanks
Tried carparts.com it was a horrible non functioning site so I tried carpart.com and searched and found some 9’ rears but none even remotely close by, thanks for the tip though I appreciate it
Theres a guy in Texarkana that parts out Ford pickups. He lists in the auto parts section of the little rock craigslist fairly often. He's had a bunch of 9 inch rear ends. There were two 73-79 trucks with 9 inch in a pic and pull in Conway, but I think they closed. Several 9 inch rears in Ford trucks at the u pull it on baseline in LR last time I was there. One was a dent, the rest were early '80 models, I believe there are suitable units in other year models, number dummy might chime in, he's always been helpful to me when looking for something and what it might be in.
The 9" Ford rear was produced for many years so there are lots of them out there. The trick is to find one that will fit your application (width, bolt circle, spring and shock mounts etc). Most 4X2 dents will interchange.
The 9" is so popular that several companies (Currie, Moser et. al.) produce new, better than stock housings, third member and axles. Of course, these are more expensive that what you'll find in the bone yard but those may need some rebuilding.
Flowney I’ve checked Currie, Strange and Moser and I’ve found nothing for 73-79 Ford trucks but if I have a 68-73 C10 or a Chevelle, Camaro or early mustang they have me covered. I was hoping to find a company making or selling axle housings that will fit but it appears it’s not available, I’m gonna call around tomorrow as everyone is shut down today but it sucks that it’s easier to find a 9’ for your Chevy than it is your Ford
The Ford 9-inch rear end was produced from 1957 through 1980 in some Ford cars and through 1986 in the Ford trucks. Dentside 9-inch rears typically have 31-spline axles but some did have 28-spline. All '80-'86 Bullnose truck 9-inch rear ends came with 31-spline axles and they have the same housing width and spring perch spread as the Dentside 9-inch rears. --some '80-'83 Ford F100 trucks have a 9-inch rear with a 5 x 4.5" lug pattern or a 5 x 5.5" lug pattern so, measure the lug spacing if getting a rear end from an '80-'83 F100.
Try John Industries in Iron River Mi. He has owned a junk yard for decades & builds new 9" rear ends for some of the big name hot rodders & racers. He most likely have a used unit on hand or if you want to he can build you one. Housing, Axles, Drive Shafts - John?s Industries Ford 9" Housing
I have no interest in John's just lived less than 50 miles away & have used him for parts.
Thanks for the link I called John’s Industries and they do have some used axle housings that will fit my 79, he also told me that being in MI they will be pitted bad from the salt on the roads, price was not bad and I’m considering ordering one but the pitting is scaring me off from purchasing one, again thanks for the link
Thanks moose! I’ve checked most those out, that 68 won’t be long enough, the 78 and 79 is what I’m looking for just have to commit to a 10hr drive, 3 weeks ago I just drove 6hrs for a cherry 1968 4spd toploader for my truck, that one link local was a dude that told me he’d rather scrap it then sell it to me because I dared to try to negotiate a price on a firm deal, I think I got a line on one at a scrap yard north of me, appreciate the links!
