overheated, wouldnt restart

ok, i have agreed to buy a 99 f250 (april 98 engine) it overheated, but then would not restart. been parked since. still turns over simply wouldnt fire. used to work for this guy, so im not worried about him hiding anything from me about it. im betting water pump and or thermostat for the over heating, details. on the wont fire, ny understanding is CPS first, then ICP. my question is, whats next? or perhaps ive missed something else i shoukd be checking before i take posession. i did check the oil, no evidence found of water. no reason atm to think theres a block problem. 250000 miles ish on this engine and frame TIA

You'll be needing a way to read the sensors and codes off the PCM. I recommend Torque Pro app on your android phone or tablet plus a
bluetooth OBDII device bluetooth OBDII device
. If you have an iPhone you'll need a wifi device instead of bluetooth. Do some research on FTE before buying, you'll find different opinions.

If no CEL is showing my first guess for a no start is lack of fuel. Open the yellow fuel drain on the back of the fuel bowl and key the ignition on. No need to crank, just ignition on. You should hear the fuel pump running, it's mounted on the frame under the drivers' door. Fuel should sploosh into the clean container you placed under the engine by the front passenger side tire.

Also be sure the batteries are strong. PCM needs to see sufficient RPM and voltage before it will attempt to fire the injectors.

Good news no water in the oil! Look for oil or fuel contamination in the coolant tank too.

If you are new to diesels there is a learning curve, but the operation of these engines is really pretty simple.

Welcome to FTE!

thank

hey thanks, ill check the fuel pump, hadnt actually thought of that yet. im not completely new to diesels, having driven or worked around them in for years, but the only one ive owned before was a 12 valve cummins. my best fried swears by these 7.3s so i figured id give it a go. i miss having excess power and a rumble under my seat.... lol been stalking this place for a while, finally got an account, looking forward to learning a lot.

Overheated a 7.3L? The only way I can see that happening is being crazy low on coolant and/or a failed cooling fan while torturing the engine on a hot day. These beasts are near impossible to overheat, I suspect your guy is guessing as to what happened. He may have a no-start, and assumed the root cause was something he did before the last shut-down. The last link in my signature should help.

A stuck closed thermostat would do it. Had it happen on a 6.9 after sleeping in a rest area outside of Houston with the AC running. Took off at daylight and was pushing a steep hill with the sun in my eyes when I smelled coolant, looked down and the gauge was pegged. Don't know how long it was pegged but the 6.9 burned oil ever since that day.

You can, but you have to find the button that lets you switch to the full website view. There are a lot of useful links, so it won't be a wasted effort. In the meantime, here is one link from my signature:
