Okay so I have 1977 f150 4X4 with 460 with complete new top end, had heads re-done new wieand intake stealth. I have a cheap summit oil/temp gauge. My issue is that is seems to me the temp gauge doesnt respond appropriately. When I first put gauge on it statred to read after truck ran for 10 or 15 minutes, but then quit and I wouldlnt get temp reading until truck ran 30 minutes and then it would jump up to 180. So I told summit and they sent me another one just like it. I installed it yesterday and after 10 or 15 minutes truck started to read 130 or 140 seemed fine. My son drives it this morning 10 miles gets home and it still not reading temp so I have him let it run and it takes nearly 30 minutes before it starts to read temp which is about 150. The outside temp is 86 and here in Oklahoma it is hot even of morning. So does this seem normal for truck not get warmed up until 30 minutes or so. It just seemed to me in this weather truck would be warmed up much quicker. How long does it take yalls trucks to get warm>
So let me inquire little further, just trying to understand completely. Is there a reason it has to go a particular place? My thinking is as long as it is in the water, same water here as at intake. Also, I have aftermarket intake not stock, not sure if that matters just pointing it out. I can also easily move it to intake to see if that makes a difference as well.
Yea, it kinda does. You have yours in the water pump with water directly from the radiator. Doesn't warm up as fast. In the manifold the water has already gone past the cylinders, where all the heat is generated. You should have a place on the intake to install the sender.

I tried it here but the thermocouple rim wouldnt seal off and it kept leaking. So I ended up trying it at the big port just under the thermostat which I believe is for heater. Fired it up and after a few minutes temperature was reading.
That picture is where I tried it but it kept leaking so I had to move it again. I guess it need a second fitting for the rim of the thermocouple to seal against.
If u look at that big brass plug jist under the thermostat thst is where I finally put it at. Son just drove it 10 miles up the road and it read like it should.
