V10 Harmonic Balancer Removal

Hey everybody I'm new to this section as I have an IDI, but we're having trouble with my Dad's 2000 F250 V10 ZF5 4X4. It's our hydra-deck truck we use to unroll bales and pack supplies around with.

Because it is a hydra-deck, it has a belt driven hydraulic pump with two V-belts going around an extra pulley which is bolted to the harmonic balancer. In between the extra pulley and harmonic balancer is a steel ringed rubber damper with six rubber bushings (kind of looks like a revolver's cylinder) that is bolted to the harmonic balancer using the three bolt holes that one normally uses to pull it off with. Somehow, these bolts became loose and wallowed out the three holes ultimately breaking the bolts off in the holes. Two are flush and one is a little ways in still.

The local Ford dealer lent us their puller which they fabbed up themselves. It has three 90 degree "hooks" which go behind the "ears" on the harmonic balancer pulley and pull from behind it. We took the centre bolt and washer out, and threaded the bolt back into the snout on the crank and have been trying to pull it off that way. This thing hasn't moved; if it has, it was a tiny amount and refuses to go further. All we're doing is bending the hooks on the puller. What have we missed? We're spinning the motor over when we start torquing on it, even with the truck in reverse.

Any help/advice VERY appreciated!

Put the bolt back in the dampener that goes into the crank, and torque it down again, the dampener might be cocked.

Once you do that, back off the crankshaft bolt a bit and use the puller against the crankshaft bolt. With no pics, I can't tell if that's even a possibility. The puller, whatever bolt in the center of the puller you're using, it's long enough to hit bottom in the crank?

Thank you for the advice Krewat, we finally got it. We did what you said, and I think we might have been a bit cocked. We were hesitant on getting aggressive with it, but after we knew for sure we could get a replacement we took the spacer off the bolt and threaded the bolt back into the crank. Dad got a big three claw puller and we pulled from around the outside of the pulley thinking whatever happens, happens. It slid off just fine, as we were worried about it coming apart at the rubber. The super-duper puller we got from Ford was what got us ****-eyed in the beginning; I think it did more harm than good lol. Anyways, live and learn for next time. Thanks again!

Very cool, glad it worked out for you

Would love to see pics of the pump and pulley installed, always want to see those aftermarket/non-OEM setups

My apologies Krewat, everybody likes pictures! Unfortunately we are waiting on parts from the states for the hydra-deck dampener/v-belt pump pulley, so it will probably be another two weeks before we can get it assembled. I just have a picture of the old harmonic balancer and the puller that did more harm than good. Good idea on the puller, but it needed to be more "refined" in order to work properly; being fabricated squarely would be a step in the right direction lol. If I remember, I'll grab a picture of the pump setup when its all back together.

Tiny bit wallowed out

In theory, it should've worked well

I have a three-jaw Snap-On puller that my brother gave me 30 years ago that would have done that job. Looks kinda like this, but maybe a bit beefier:
