On Friday got caught in some construction traffic. Stop and go for about 20 mins. Just as I was turning to get on the freeway check engine message appeared. Temp gauge was pegged. It wasn't a bit before. Ran it on the hiway after about a half of mile the temp came down to normal. It was 92 at the time. Ran it today no codes let it idle for a half hour saw temps between 189-198. What would cause the sudden overheat? themostate stuck closed for a bit, clutch fan not lock up? A little stumped. Truck is 05 260,000 miles 185,000 on short block original water pump and fan.
When it overheated did you hear the fan blowing? If it didn't get your attention, the viscous clutch would be a good place to start. If the fan was on a stuck t-stat would be a good starting point and t-stats are cheap.
No I haven't tried that however while driving as temp hit 210 I could hear fan ramp up and temp would drop to 106. I did this several times in an hour drive 70 mph and 90 F outside temp. What is coincided normal highway temp?
Well after monitoring temps for two weeks sho heated up again. This time I cough it before it berried the needle I plugged in the scanner in traffic and saw temps quickly rising from 225 to 240. I pulled into a parking lot just as it hit 240. Let it coll down for a bit and saw temps in the teens in the way home. Did not hear fan at all. I will try the blue wire test, is there anything else that triggers the fan other than the pcm?
I was having some issue towing my 31 foot bumper pull. Hi coolant and oil temps. Fan never fully engaged like it has in the past. I have a switch for blue wire mod. When I would engage it fan would become fully locked but it would make a sequel noise and rpms were increased with it locked. So I am in the middle of changing fan clutch now. I went with Hayden 3261.
i used an air chisel on old fan nut to break it free then it spun off. i used a 48mm wrench to tighten the fan back down with a slight hit if chisel to snug it down. 8 mm for fan shroud closet to radiator (2 bolts). and 15 mm for other half of fan shroud (4 bolts). Losened radaitor hold down clamps for more room (4 8mm bolts). and my step on front of bumper... pretty straight forward.
replaced with Motorcraft clutch, It seems like it locks up more and at highway speeds. Temps like 198-203 it will run? What is the protocol for when the fan should engage?

I commonly see temps in this range, but with 0% FDC on both our trucks in the summer, both running stock MC stats. That makes it seem like ECT isn't the root issue here.
