Getting ready to install my Redhead steering gear and when I pulled the left wheel I noticed some trails radiating from the center cap out. Then I got the unmistakable smell of gear lube. First glance at you tube it looks like a pretty horrendous job to replace seals on the front axle. I like to do a lot myself, but this looks beyond my abilities. Any ideas on what it would take to have a pro do it?
Not sure what year your truck is but on my Dana 60 the only way to do it is from the inside. You have to pull the axles and carrier out to get to the seals.
It wasn't too bad, just time consuming. I tried to make my own seal installer instead of ponying up the $$$ for the OTC tool...bad idea. If I have to do it again I will definitely get the tool.
As Batman7777 said, plenty of threads on this. I won't try and do them justice here.
After having a good chance to do some work on my truck yesterday and becoming more familiar with it, I discovered that there is no way that I would be getting gear lube out of where I was thinking. So I don't know where the gear lube smell is coming from. I did find that the front pumpkin cover has been gobbed with what looks like clear silicone. Looks terrible! But not leaking so I will leave it alone for now.
