I'm looking at a 1987 F150 4x4 with a 302 and a 5spd. I know 302's are good motors, what about the 5spd and the rest of the drive train?
TIA
Jeff
Wow...302 a good motor? I always avoid 'em like a plague...never owned a good one yet....With the 5 speed I'm assuming it's a Mazda tranny...junk. I've had a couple go out on me....the rebuilders charge an outrageous price for 'em because demand ios so high for 'em....I've heard of some having good luck with 'em, but I'd be wary....
The 302 is one of the best of not thee best motor the Ford Ever produced. I have one with over 300,000 km in an 86 F150 4x4 and it will not die. As for the tranny I am not sure, I have heard good things about them but I am sure someone else will be able to help ya out! Hope this helps.
The 302's are good engines I prefer them in cars though would rather have a 300 six or a 351 in truck as for trans stay away from the Mazda's they are to light and all they are is a three speed with over drive. I prefer the ZF 5 speed it has a compound low gear with and over drive fifth. They are tough. If you don't need over drive then a NP 435 is also very good. Just my .02 worth
Do not listen to toecutter he obviously does not know what he is talking about. The 5.0 is well known to be bulletproof. And it is probobly the best late model motor made (the $hevy 350 is, i hate to say it, still a little better).
To answer your questions the motor is a good choice. The tranny on the other hand is a different matter. Find out which one it is!!!!!!!
