Axle shaft question
I have a '62 F600 262 inline 6, transmission code F...Warner T98 4 speed, rear axle code F1 which I believe to be an Eaton 13802. I'm working on the ear brakes due to leaky wheel cylinders. The passenger side went fine but when I moved to the driver's side I can't get the axle to go all the way in, it lacks 1/4". I've tried rotating the axle to different positions which does no good. If I rotate the driveshaft it causes the drum to turn so it is engaging some. When I tap on the axle with a hammer it sounds like it against something solid but won't go in. What am I missing?

i cant say for 100% its the issue... but when i was working on a customers truck once i had the spider gears inside the carrier unit drop just enough when the shaft was removed it prevented us from reinstalling the shaft all the way. We fought with the thing for 1/2 hr before finally pulling the cover off.. It was the only way we figure it out.. The shaft was hitting and pushing on the back of the gear while we had another tech trying to put the shaft back in. When we lifted the gear up just a little the shaft slid right in no problem. Was the first time id ever seen it, but the tech i was working with had 15 years on me and said it was only the 3rd time hes ever seen something like that happen. So cant say for sure thats the issue but figured id throw it out there for you as possibly being the cause. Only thing is your post stated your getting stopped at 1/4" out where we got stopped at 1-1/2" out..

I actually think this is the problem. I pulled the rear cover thinking I could see the side gear but do the the differential case design I can't see the gear. I've tried turning the driveshaft while pressing in on the axle but so far no luck. The heat index is to be 111-112 tomorrow so It might sit a few more days.
