DTE question

Is there a reprogram for the distance to empty? My truck reads basically almost out of fuel or like 10 miles till empty. Yet when I fill it up it only holds 26 gallons. I believe my truck has either a 34 or 36 gallon tank

I think there's probably some adjustment to be made in FORScan (others will confirm), but you may also want to check if your truck qualifies for the fuel tank TSB/recall where Ford was replacing tanks due to this same issue. Do a search in the 2017+ forum and I'm sure you'll find the thread(s). Best of luck.

TSB (17-0046) released today that will correct those of us who could never squeeze 34 gallons into our tanks

Guess I'm interested in two things. That TSB is for the Diesel, which, isn't that a slightly different size tank? By like a gallon.

Second, how far past 0 have you run. I've always had around an extra 50 miles past the E in old fords. Haven't tested this.

Read the whole linked thread above ... There is a pic of tech instructions that tells them what to check Gas or diesel.... Not sure about running past empty. Try not to do it... The potential down time costs money

Running past "E", or running fuel too low is un-good. Fuel is the pump's cooling mechanism and the less fuel you have, the higher your temps rise. Why risk it? I don't get why some folks, including my wife, HAVE to do it. Is there some mental block to filling up before the light comes on?

My 2018 is the total opposite of yours. Last time I got fuel, I put in 34.8 gallons and the gas light wasn't even on. I'm curious what the true tank size is...

Your signature shows that you have a long bed. If so, I believe that you have a 48 gal tank.

Thanks. I just checked the Ford SD brochure and it does say 48. I just assumed it was 34. Good to know I I have to haul on a long trip.

So I just installed a new radio in the truck, a pioneer unit with the Maestro controller to talk to the truck. On the vehicle functions, I can select a gas guage.

So DTE on the truck was down to about 25 or 30 miles. Showed I had burned I think 28 gallons or so. I put in just shy of 30 gallons. And taking the pioneer system that showed 12% left, it was off by less than a gallons vs intake.

With that said. DTE is underestimating, and leaving with about 50 miles if it went to zero, I would guess. This is something I've always seen on my fords. The gallons burned is actually pretty accurate and I can normally get a gallon more than it says I burned.
