im watching trucks and it looks as if they are using propane similarly as someone would use nitrous... does this only work for diesels?

Propane is a conversion for gasoline engines. I have seen industrial diesels running on propane also. The gas pipeline uses natural gas to run their diesels.

Are you saying a diesel engine will run on propane? What modifications have to be done to do this?

When I went to the factory school at Fairbanks Morse in Beloit, WI, they had some Fairbanks Morse natural gas engines that they were re-building. They were identical to the diesels with a few modifications like spark ignition and probably many other things.

I don't even like COOKING with propane, I definately wouldn't want to be exploding it on purpose in the cylinders of my engine!

Diesel engines burn fuel more efficiently when a small spray of propane is injected - similar to nitro, but cheaper. A number of the PSD guys on this site have propane....

Are you asking about propane injection on a diesel?
No, you can't quite do that in a gasser.
The two have different effects. In a gasser, you can convert it over, and run it as a primary fuel.

In a diesel, it thins the feul, making it burn hotter, faster, ect, therefore providing more HP, but, much like applying nitrous, you have to do so sparingly, and in the right conditions, or boom.

Or at least that's the way it's been explained to me, I've never run it in a diesel (well, other than in the winter, shhhh), but know people that have setup their gassers to run propane.

On the Navy base here in Norfolk, VA about 1/3 of the government vehicles run on propane. They say (and I concur) that it is cleaner burning and that results in longer engine life. You get less acids and condensation in the crankcase from combustion.

the propane injection on diesels is propane gas, not liquid, it is run through a valve thing that makes all the liquid propane from the tank turn to a gas, and it is sprayed into the air intake. its a lot like a dry nitrous system. its also all run through a computer so the mixture is correct
