92 F-150 automatic with overdrive . Let my brother in law use my truck for the last 8 months . Slight tranny leak . Instead of Mercon V he has been using type F . Got it back the other day , drove it about 15 miles and it started slipping . Left the truck overnight went back the next day and the truck moved about 500 feet and started slipping again . Can I get by with just draining the torque converter , pan and putting a new filter in or am I going to have to do a complete rebuild ?
How bad is it slipping? Won't move at all or still driveable? If it's still driveable, I'd start by draining and refilling several times. Drive maybe 150 miles or so between changes. See if it feels any better after doing that.
Type F isn't making the transmission slip. Type F has no friction modifiers and makes for harsh and firm shifts. If the trans is slipping that bad the clutches in the low reverse hub are shot. It's time for a rebuild.

He's right. Type f is less slippery than MERCON V.
How did your brother in law use the truck for those 8 months? Towing? Plowing? Heavy Hauling? Sadly, it does indeed sound like time for a rebuild...
Maybe it got overworked, overheated, always driven cold and worn out, etc ... You let someone use your vehicle for a long time and you have no idea how they drive it. Me, I almost never let anyone drive my own truck, it gets warmed up at least 5 minutes every day before I head out.
I'm sure he didn't abuse it . I've know him for over 50 years . He used it to take his mom to and from work , grocery store , etc. .So you're thinking it needs rebuilt ?
Check the electrical connections, scan it, pressure check it, send in an oil sample. Get the manual and there is a series of tests to do in order to troubleshoot problems.
In the mean time, don't drive it.
Do you need to pull it to seal up the leaks?
I have run Dex/Merc in my e4ods since the beginning, worked them hard and they are still healthy. They don't just up and die from a sip of questionable fluid. My next change will probably be Merc V since now I know better.

When you say he's been using Type F does that mean he's had to keep topping off the fluid with it?
