Hey guys, how hard is it to swap my 170 for a 289 or 302? Would like to do a 289 or 302 and a C4 transmission. Is there a lot of work to do with the steering column to switch to an automatic? Speedway or Summit for a kit or Motor mounts?
Rather than post a bunch of links, may I suggest you google "early econoline v8 swap". Be sure you have a couple of months to go through all the hits you will find.
Since you have a 170, you probably have a 7 or 7 1/4" differential, so plan on an upgrade there too.
Which year Econoline? It looks like a 1965-1967, which is good. The cross member under the engine can be modified to hold a V8 and the dog house is better for a V8 than the earlier models.
You our might already have a 9" rear axle. You need that. The 7 1/4" rear axle is no good over 100 HP. See here for axle comparisons. Econoline Axles
