Recommended oil

Good afternoon,
As I’m coming up on my first oil change with my 5.0 I want to make sure I make the right decision. I’ve seen a lot of people on f150 pages say that 5w20 oil is not the best oil for longevity. Most are recommending 5w30 or if it is 5w20 for it it be a full synthetic. The manual recommends 5w20 with a synthetic blend. Which would be like a motor craft 5w20. What do you guys recommend? I want to drive this truck for the next 20 years so I’m trying to do it right. Also, if you can add the best oil filter, please. Thank you guys in advance!

You definitely posted this so you could add in the picture showing off your sweet rig!

As for longevity, I see the license plate is in the middle so you have the 5.0 V8. The Coyote V8's are known for longevity, easily lasting over 200,000 miles. However, the 2018's and after don't use the Coyote V8's though so I am not quite sure here.

Oh no. I didn’t know this wasn’t a coyote engine. I feel like an idiot, I thought it was pretty much the coyote engine with a few upgrades. I hope since this is the first of the redesigned engine it doesn’t have problems.

I'm sorry, it's still known as the Coyote engine, but it's completely different from the 2015-2017 engines. For all I know, it could turn out to be a great engine. Ford makes great V8's!

Yep, it’s an entirely new engine. Don’t overthink it. Motorcraft 5w20 is a great oil as is the Motorcraft filter. Don’t let someonetalk you into exotic oils like Amzoil or Redline. Stick with a top brand oil, they’re all good these days. Make sure the oil you choose meets the same spec the Ford has.

With the old engine that has sleeved cylinders, I would say go ahead and use the 5w30. But the new 5.0 has coated cylinders, so I would stick with the specified oil for now.

Check out www.bobistheoilguy.com for more oil info

I experiment with different oils and spend time on BITOG as well. Honestly, any name brand oil that meets Ford’s spec is going to be fine. I have yet to see any oil not work in a motor, especially since you don’t have a Ecoboost.

There is a lot of keyboard talk about oil viscosity and yet I haven’t seen any facts that prove a heavier weight oil is better than what Ford recommended. So stick with 5W-20.

Personally, I always use a full synthetic and change when the oil life monitor reaches 20%. But I’m pretty AR about maintenance. There are a lot of posts here of high mileage motors following Ford’s recommendation.

Oil not only lubricates but it is also a coolant for things like main and rod bearings. Modern engines are built with some pretty tight clearances unlike 20 or more years ago. If you use an oil that has too high a viscosity when hot you won't get sufficient flow across the bearings to carry away the heat nor will you get a sufficiently thick oil film between the rings and cylinder walls or cam and lifters. I figure that the engineers that designed the engine should know what oil works best. Some foreign cars (Honda and Toyota) even spec a 0W-20 oil for their engines.
Having said that, I use a 5W-20 full synthetic. I regularly send an oil sample to a lab when I change my oil. Just me. I like to know if anything funny is going on in my engine. The one thing I have found is that Ford filters seem to do a better job of removing particulates than any of the usual brand name filters so that's all I use any more.

If you want to maintain your warranty, go by what the manufacturer recommends.

Okay so how big of a difference is it between motorcraft synthetic blend vs a fully synthetic oil?

I'm on my 4th Ford truck since 1996. All have been trouble free. All have used ONLY what Ford puts in them. I do some oil changes myself others at the dealership when I have a coupon and use Motorcraft oil and filters exclusively. A blend when that was recommended and not when it was recommended. Same with trans oil and coolant...keep your Ford all Ford and not only will it be happy.....so will you.

Use the weight of oil that`s recommended which is 5W20. I also have a 5.0 in my 2016 and i`ve used Motorcraft "full synthetic" 5W20 since my first oil change and my engine is running just fine.

Big difference in price that`s for sure. You`re not going to feel any difference in your engine but full synthetic oil has better properties than regular oil or a synthetic blend. Don`t make this more difficult for yourself than it has to be. Either of the Motorcraft oils mentioned will serve you and your engine well but the key is regular maintenance. Also, stick with the recommended Motorcraft oil filter.

I’d say Motorcraft oil on BITOG forum generally has a good reputation. The biggest problems it faces are it’s not always available at a retail store and it’s normally more expensive than the popular brands. Therefore guys are not buying it to change in their driveway and so there are very few used oil analysis posted. I can’t say I’ve seen more than a few over the past year and I don’t even know if they were semi or full synthetic. That’s a long winded way of saying “I dunno...” to your question.

Full synthetic oil will handle extreme temperatures better than normal oil and last significantly longer (between changes). Blends give you the middle ground with a cost savings (in theory) over full synthetic. But if you change your own oil, you can get excellent, full synthetic oil from your local auto parts store or even Amazon often cheaper than blends.

I use Motorcraft filters on my FORD's. GREAT filters at a good price. If Motorcraft is not available, then my go-to filter is WIX.

As for oils, I always use FULL Synthetic at the manufacturer recommended weight. If the oil cap says, 5w20 or 0w20 or 5w30, (or owners manual) then that is what I use. If you plan on going the 7500 or 10000 mile oil intervals, then go with FULL Synthetic...and skip the blended.

GREAT looking truck!!
