2005 e150 - ABS light no CEL's
2005 E150, ABS light just came on but the its not throwing any CEL's.
The brake pedal has been feeling soft and 'spungy' after a new master cyl (a few years back)
Recently I noticed that when I start the van I get a rough 'grinding/crunchy' feel in the brake pedal, (as if the ABS is activated) but I'm not moving..
Where do I start?
Wheel ABS sensors?
Now, let's think about the rest of your situation. You have three symptoms:
- Spongy feel to the brakes.
- Grinding feel to the pedal.
- ABS light.
Let's look at those.
1. Spongy feel:
So, what could cause a spongy feel? Air in the system, right? And that's been a problem since when? Since the master cylinder was replaced. Hmmm. Could ABS sensors cause this? No. They have no connection to the pedal.
2. Grinding feel:
Now, what could cause a grinding feel in the pedal? What is it connected to? There's a mounting point for the pedal, with a pivot of some kind. Something in the pedal pivot, perhaps? Could be. Where else? It's connected to the master cylinder, right? Something in the master cylinder? Certainly. Could ABS sensors cause this? No. They aren't connected to the pedal in any way.
3. ABS light:
What do ABS sensors do? They sense wheel movement. Could they light the ABS light? Of course. Could a problem with the master cylinder mess with the ABS? Of course, it's the heart of the braking system.
So, what do we have? Two strong indicators of a problem with your master cylinder, and one weak indicator of a possible problem with the sensors, which could also indicate a problem with the master cylinder. To put it another way, you have two strong indicators of a problem with your master cylinder, and one weak indicator of a problem with your master cylinder.
Start with where the symptoms are pointing - the master cylinder.
It clearly wasn't bled correctly when it was replaced, and now perhaps a seal has been chewed up? Or there is some other problem with it.
