I was out in the apartment lot the other day, and one of the managers wandered by and had a few bones to pick with me!
1) "Uhh, there's an oil spot under your truck. I'd appreciate it if you could do something about it"
- Never skipped a beat! (It was actually power steering fluid, and I had the new pump in my hand at the time) "As a matter of fact, I'm in the process of fixing it for ALL TIME!" (as opposed to dumping in more fluid and letting the machine slowly trash itself. It must seem different somehow, if you have grease on you!)
2) (And this was the one I had to wonder about) I need to set up a little background to it here:
I rent a single bedroom apartment. This entitles me to one parking sticker, and one parking space. SUPPOSEDLY...
I was told when I moved in: "The covered parking is assigned, there are uncovered parking spaces around the back - those are up for grabs"
But anyway...
I park one of my trucks on the street. The new/used extended cab flatbed I have been parking in my space for now. (Soon to change).
So the lifted F100 I normally drive was out at the curb ON A PUBLIC ROAD and this fella is tellin' me:
"Some of the residents have complained that there is a BIG TRUCK parked at the curb that makes it hard to see down the street when they pull out of the parking lot..." !!!!!
*DEEP breathe - breath out...*
People, there were times in my life when I was younger when I would not have considered the fact that I had an agreeable working relationship with the individual in question, and that I stood a lot to lose if I verbally lashed out at the management. I needed this guy on my side, and I thought about it, and it seemed to me that if a space farther back from the turn out was available I should try to do that instead of taking a spot I knew I'd have no one in front of me in when I pulled out in the morning.
But honestly? Deep inside I wanted so bad to tell this office working, Southern California, all about his own conveniences, special individual:
"IT'S A PUBLIC THOROUGHFARE!!! YOU DON'T OWN IT, YOU JUST PAY TAXES ON IT! AND I HAVE TO PARK OUT THERE WHILE PEOPLE WITH FIVE TEENAGERS AND SEVEN CARS IN A TWO BEDROOM TAKE UP ALL THE OTHER PARKING SPACES AROUND, YOU DUMB (expletive deleted)!!!!"
~I told the man I would think about it, and he said "Thank you"....
-end of rant-

I don't have to have any parking tags where I live, but I'm only allowed no more than 2 vehicles, and any thing else has to go in a monthly rate lot over in Tim Buk Too.
I also have a car port big enough for 2 vehicles, and just enough room for my goldwing, in between my f150 and my wifes taurus.
Yet even though every where else in the neighbor hood has a average of 4 vehicles per house.....believe me I checked many times.
About 1 month ago our lot manager was johnny on the spot, when I pulled up in my goldwing, and in formed me that I was to have my goldwing parked in this parking lot in BFE, because I'm only allowed 2 vehicles, and also because my 78' goldwing is a "recreational vehicle" (They really hate bikes in this park, if it isn't a harley).
I basically told him to fly a kite, in some colorful words, after I stated the above 4 vehicle average. I also proceed to inform him that my goldwing was in fact my work vehicle and not the play toy that he tryed to make it be.
I also have a Goldwing - a 1981. I used to know a guy with a '85 Goldwing. It was his only transportation and he was a house painter. He got some strange looks as he went buy pulling a 4 X 8 trailer loaded with paint and ladders.

My apartment has the same rules. Usually my truck runs in one form or another. Although, during the times when I didn't have a motor in it, I would periodically push it around to different parking spaces now and then to give the impression that it ran. It worked enough to fool them!!

Parking issues....
I hate appartments. One of my closest friends gets much fewer visits from me because of the parking situation at his place. He lives in an appartment complex surrounded by other appartment complexes. Predictably enough, the street surrounding these complexes are overflowed with runoff from the insufficient "tennants only" parking lots. Trying to find a space, much less one big enough for my full size F-250 long bed super cab, is a nightmare.
I have an edge in the winter after a snowstorm, though, when I can brute force my truck in & out of buried spots that most vehicles can't. But that doesn't last long, either. He tries to get me to stop in when we're hanging out, but the street parking is so bad I often don't even do that. "I'll call you on my cell when I'm close -- meet me outside."
I live an apartment for now. Although most tenants only get one space, some of the married folk at my place(with two vehicles) can get another space if there is enough spaces. Every space is assigned with a number. I have yet to see this abused. However they have a big problem with you popping the hood and pokin around inside the engine. Our management assumes you are about to make a mess and wont let you do any work at all on your vehicle. Unless its emergency type work (to them its a flat tire). Its pretty strict here. I had come off a patrol and took my truck off of the jack stands and uncovered it. I checked all the drivetrain fluids (no problem there). Within 5 minutes of me poppin the hood to check fluids there I was confronted by the manager who asked me to stop what I was doing. I kindly explained what I was doing and that calmed her down a bit. They are just to quick to "mange the tenants". I hate that.
The apartment building I live in is the opposite J.R. The management doesn't do a thing for keeping things managed. Some enforcement around here would be nice. They do let us work on our vehicles, though it has to be reasonable. I do my work in my garage.
Speaking of the parking issues: It's not too bad here. We get one designated spot and there are extra spots nearby. My car gets the numbered spot and the truck is in a garage (which I have to pay extra for). I used to park the pickup at the end of the building, but a couple of years ago someone took the time to loosen all the lugs to the ends on the rear tires. Since then the pickup has been garaged.
I was recently told that 4 vehicles was too many, I had to move at least one of them preferably two (our limit is supposed to be two). For 3 years parking was not a problem, nor was working on your vehicle. Now that a new dentist office rented space downstairs, our parking was cut in half because we can't park alongside their office. The kicker? All the dentist employees insist on parking in back (the resident's lot). While their lot is empty most of the time, I have to maneuver to get around their vehicles parked in MY lot. Grr!
I only moved one, though, my winter beater is in a cousin's barn for now. Gonna love their faces when I drag it out and park it next to their fancy cars.
