Steering Box

I have pretty much narrowed it down to a problem with my steering box. I was wondering what experiences you guys have had with the master pro boxes from Orileys? Or should I just break down and buy the redhead? Money is tight right now but I don't want to throw good after bad. Any help is appreciated.

I have had pretty good luck with the NAPA rebuilts, they come with a life time warrantee.

There is a thread in the super duty section about a blue top steering box. Take a look at it. It may be a good alternative to a redhead

This is what I used and at about 1/2 the price if I remember correct. Been on over 3 yr with no problem.

BTW I have an older F250, and a sloppy steering wheel. The guy I got it from said the guy he bought it from put a new gear box on it. I thought he just "said" that because the steering was sloppy. Maybe he put on a crappy used gear box?? I put a rebuilt on and it was still sloppy. I had the front end aligned and the guy said I needed a new gear box. ???? I finally tracked it down to the 2 piece steering shaft. It is a solid oval bar and it fits in a oval tube. There is slop between the 2 and that is where I have the play. Besides welding them together, not sure how to fix. Besides replacing it with one from another 30 year old truck.

BTW not sure if this is your problem but worth checking. Engine off and have a friend lightly turn the wheel back n forth. Then look at the junction above the gear box. (if yours has the same style as mine)

Thank's for the replies so far. I don't really have much slop in mine. When I turn to the right a low speeds it's like not having power steering. I did a complete flush (fluid was nasty) and as I was working the wheels back and forth I could hear a clicking/popping noise coming from the steering box. My tie rods are near the end of their life and have some play but that is not where the noise was coming from. The ball joints were done about 20,000 miles ago and seem to be functioning fine. Everything I have read online points to the steering box. I am hoping that I will have some time today to put the front end up in the air and see if I can really pinpoint the noise. I will definitely check out the steering shaft when I do this. The reason I was asking about the steering box's is that I have seen some complaints with the rebuilt's and I wanted to make sure that I am not buying crap. I only want to do this once. One thing I have learned with these trucks is that aftermarket upgrades and OEM seem to be the better option most of the time.

Not sure what you read. But from what I found... While parked in the drive, turn the wheels back and forth. If it feels like no power steering, rev the engine 1500-2000 if it will turn then the pump is weak. If your fluid is crap it may take flushing it out several times with a week of driving in between, to get all the crud out. I just flushed mine a couple times and replaced the pump anyway.

Also chock the wheels and get someone you trust behind the wheel, engine running and turn the steering back and forth. In my old truck I kept getting a popping when turning. I found out it was the inner tie rod flipping when turning. It would make a popping/clunking sound. It did not have play, maybe worn in the inside. But that was making my noise. It still could be your gear box. I just hate buying parts to find out something else is wrong.

I bought one off the bay for about $150. It was a rebuilder called Detroit axle. It was in nice shape and no problems. If I remember there are 3 bolts that hold it to the frame. 2 power steering lines. The steering column (one bolt iirc) And the pitman arm. You will need a pitman arm puller and a socket to fit the nut. Most of the time they are greasy and it is heavy for one guy to hold up while aligning the bolts. But doable if persistent. I guess the biggest thing is having the room and a good wrench the get the lines loose. It is not too bad, except for having the room and being heavy.
