Question about port/gasket matching an intake manifold

When doing this job, how far into the runners should you go?

Just far enough to make a smooth transition. Actually this is more important on the head port. You don't want the intake port larger than the head port. And unless you bolt it all together and use a bore scope (unless you have a single plane and can see down into the runners to the head ports) to see how it fits, you really won't know how the intake ports line up with the gaskets and head port.

With the guide pins in place, lay "pencil carbon" paper on the head, inky side down. Torque it and the ink will transfer onto the head where there is an overlap and that becomes your guide for what to remove. Repeat as necessary.

Use the old gasket or turkey pan "without sealer" to make sure things line up.

Matching

You can sit the gasket on the head face in its correct position on center with bolts , see how it looks and then move gasket to intake face , mine required alot of porting , you can leave the intake side about 1 mm all round smaller , port into intake about 3/4" or so .Or if you keen blue intake face of head then transfer the port size with a light scribe to a visible area above port (must be square) all then do the horizontal lines and make them visable from the end , then fit gaskets and intake ,tighten and transfer the marks to the intake , this is a dificult method . I think it is done by people like reher Morrison . Cheers

Make sure your intake gasket fits properly though, AFR stress not to port match to fel pro gaskets as they don't fit the intake port on the heads properly. Im personally still trying to figure out how I can port match my performer intake to match the AFR heads without using the intake gasket as a pattern.

I think ideally you would port both the intake and the head port to a common size.

You can do that. but in the case of AFR heads you wouldn't want to as they are CNC machined for best flow. Its why they don't advise it. I don't know what cylinder heads he are running.

If you just port the intake you may wind up with a ledge around the head that will peel fuel out of the air stream.

As long as the intake is slightly smaller than the port it will be fine , it will be better than stock .It's a 200hp truck motor , don't over think it .

well for me I don't know what I am doing I am awaiting a reply from edelbrock about their proflow 4, I might be going multi port fuel injection which port matching wont matter as the fuel is being sprayed straight into the head and doesn't have to flow down the intake runner.

Port matching is to reduce turbulence in the airflow to maximize the ram effect.
