what other symptoms are you having? is your speedometer needle jumping? Is your abs light on? do you have a poor signal code from the vss in the tranny? I am currently replacing the instrument cluster on my 92 bronco because of the PSOM inside the cluster. The dss in the rear diff sends a signal to the PSOM, the PSOM then sends the signal to the vss in the tranny and also to the abs module. if the PSOM is bad, then problem shifting occurs, along with the other symptoms.

the PSOM is programable speedometer/odometer module and it is located inside the instrument cluster. You are correct, the vss is at the end of the tranny that goes into the t-case. It should be on the top and a little hard to get to but I have yet to replace this part myself, though I already purchased the new one.

another thing to look at is the MLPS if the symptom is only transmission related. (manual lever position sensor)

here is the thing... i thought that the vss went in the t-case, i was wrong. when i went in to purchase the vss they gave me one with a speedometer cable connector but the instrument cluster does not use a speedo cable then it hit me the e in e4od is for electronic, hence the need for a mechanical device such as the speedo cable. I went back and asked to exchange it for an abs speed sensor, in the rear dif bell housing. It cost $32.00.

I have a '94 5.0L with E4OD transmission. I had similar symptoms to Broncobigtire. I purchased a code reader ($25 from Walmart) and kept getting a code 452 - poor Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) Signal.
This is what the Ford dearlership did:
(1) Replaced the speed sensor which is housed in the rear differential. Did not fix the problem.
(2) Repalced the ABS module after pulling some bad ABS codes - the signal from the sensor goes through the ABS before it gets to the transmission. Cost $$$ and did not fix the problem.
(3) Finally they replaced the Programable Speedometer/Odometer Module (PSOM) and did some other work for free (I told them I suspected the PSOM from the start). This, at last, appears to have fixed the problem. I am no longer getting the erratic/hard shifts and I no longer get 452 codes.

sound like you have been fighting a problem I've got.....hard shifts

The E stands for Extra hard to fix.

I have a 91 Bronco which I do not believe has the PSOM module

Any suggestions on where to get electrical diagrams.

Sounds like you've done some digging....

I've got a 90 with a E4OD and I too have some hard shifts but they only occur under hard acceleration. If I take it easy off the line then the tranny will shift fine. Usually I get a real nasty clunk when it tries to shift. It almost feels like the tranny dropped out of the vehicle.

I just put a MPLS sensor on the trans....FORD wanted $107 and I talked them down to $72. It had the connector conversion kit which was a little painful to install. I used a small 1/16 x 1/16" silver solder stick to release the pins in the old connector. Was easy once I got the hang of it. Light pressure was only needed to pull the wires/end out. It really staighten out the 1-2 shifts but 2-3 and 3-OD still harder than I like. I'm going to replace the TPS sensor next...Quote $42 for sensor. Will let u know the outcome..under acceleration like mine and yours will probably be the TPS.
