I have a 04 Excursion, 6.0 PSD, IPR Gen 3 EGR delete, IPR remote oil cooler and coolant filter installed. Before I cleaned the filter my engine coolant temps normally ran about 188 once the engine ran for about 20 min. My oil temps would be about 5 degrees different post coolant filter clean and 10 degrees different before a filter cleaning. I would normally drain about 3 gallons of coolant off before removing the coolant filter for cleaning then return the coolant to the tank after reinstalling the filter. I will normally see engine coolant temps climb to about 195-200 after a filter cleaning and then come back down after some running time, say a month or so. Has anybody else experienced this issue? Post filter cleaning my oil temps would be only a few degrees different at speed and at idle the temps were usually below engine coolant temps. It is currently 90-100 degrees outside during the day.
Sounds odd. I would say it could be flow related as the filter accumulates debris, but then again after a couple filter cleanings most/all the debris should be gone. How long have you had the filter?
Could also be thermostat related. The current OEM thermostats are not the same as the one that came with the vehicle from what I can tell. My factory thermostat would hold very steady temp at ~192. The replacement OEM one I put in recently is all over the place (190-198°) depending on driving conditions. Are your ECTs steady?
At idle coolant temps stay steady around 188, oil temps stay right around that too. When driving I’ve noticed temps up in the 197 area and fluctuate around there, usually between 5-8 degrees. The temps aren’t bad just not as steady as I’ve seen over the past several years. Going to replace the thermostat tomorrow before my trip, hopefully that will solve this issue. Engine temps haven’t been over 200 in several years but I’ll be towing a trailer this time, maybe 10K, and I just wanted to double check. I know I’ll have higher than normal temps while towing, expecting 205-210 when going uphill but they should fall quickly once the strain is gone.
Just changed the thermostat with a Motorcraft OEM replacement. Started the truck and replaced the removed coolant while the truck was running this time, hopefully this will eliminate the issue. I’ll keep it updated.
Must be resolved. Drove the truck towing about 10K trailer and temps were about were I expected, 205 normal in the hills of East Tennessee and oil temps within 10 degrees at the top end. On the flat highway it was around 195-205.
Glad it worked out. I still need to yank my new OEM thermostat out and will replace it with a Stant. The Ford thermostats are not the same these days it seems.
