Bought the charging pad at Best Buy. A little trimming on the tray, an additional usb power port, a 12” flat micro usb cable and it works like a champ...
How do you keep your phone on it? I have a wireless charger on my nightstand, but I never use it because if you just barely nudge the phone it stops charging, and it charges so slowly. I was thinking of moding the inductor plate to attach to the backside of my phone holder....but haven't gotten that far. Let us know how you like it after a while of using it.
Hey Tricon...Been using it for a couple of weeks now... so far no problems. This pad has a soft type coating on its surface which helps keep my phone in place, and its not picky on having the phone at an exact spot. I would say a 3/4" off from center target @ 360* and it keeps locked on charge. About 39 bucks at Best Buy... not a bad little pad...
I’ve been trying to find a good solution for weeks. I like what you didn’t Tricon.
I want a wireless magnetic mount that I can put on the same tray that will hold my phone upright. I’ve found a few viable options, just trying to find the cleanest look with easiest use. And I want to make the mount detectable in case I want to slide the cup holder over. I think some 3m hard Velcro (command strip style) may work for that.
But now I’m considering something wired to take advantage of the Apple Car Play.
I know you said that you did some trimming on the tray. I see the trimming and it looks nice and clean. But how did you get the USB cable from under the tray to the USB port in the electronics bay? Did you have to drill the console?
Sure, I didn't take too many photos when I was doing it. But I purchased this off Amazon for $9. Then I cut off the foot with a dremel tool. I just bolted that to the side of the cubby and drilled a hole for the USB-C connector. Its connected on the other side to the USB module so Android Auto works with it. I've been super happy with it, its very functional and easy to glance down at your phone if you need to. When you mount it, make sure the mount is low enough so that the secondary cup holder can still slide over, I almost screwed the pooch there until I noticed it at the last second.
Just added this to my saved for later cart on Amazon. $35 and change. I'm still on an iPhone 7 but both the wife and I will be getting new ones this Sept when the next version comes out so we'll want a pad in the truck. Thanks for the pics and idea!
