Drain the tank. The old diesel in there is likely a jelly by now.

New filters, new oil, new diesel, and so on. Likely new batteries. Bring a spare voltage regulator (if the 1990 had a VR).

Purge the air from the lines: What to do if no Diesel Fuel is coming out of the Schroeder Valve on a 6.9 / 7.3 IDI ? IDI Online

Purge the air from the injector lines: How to Crack Injector Lines and Purge Air on a 6.9 / 7.3 IDI Diesel Engine ? IDI Online

Take it easy on the starter. crank for ten seconds, then let the starter rest for a few minutes between crankings.

As long as the engine is solid, the IP is decent, and the injectors are good, it should start right up. There isn't any computers or electronics to worry about on these old beasts, so its all a matter of getting fuel to the injectors.

Also, bring some ATF just in case it runs funny after you get it started. ATF will help lube the IP and injectors.

Usually, people archive their old IDI's after something catastrophic debilitated the vehicle. You usually don't leave a good vehicle sitting around for 6 years. So I'd expect there to be something really wrong with it, which will complicate your process for awakening mighty kong.

After getting it running, I highly recommend changing the belts and hoses if your going to be driving it any distance at all. #1 cause of premature failure of our old fleet of these engines in our Ups trucks years ago were hoses, mainly heater hoses. If a hose splits on the hwy and your eye isn’t on the temp guage, it’s toast!! It’s cheap insurance.
